Okay, so I can tell you exactly what happened with that shoe because I've done the same thing with my own shadow. Somewhere off camera and out of your sight, there was a glass that the light was reflecting through from another angle. Since you were only blocking one angle of light, the more concentrated angle was still resent beneath the shadow of your hand.
This can be done if you stand with your back to the sun and tilt your head so the sun catches the light and shines it over onto your shadow.
Likewise, if you stand with your back to the sun and have a reflective thing in front of you, it will shine light down in a focused area of your shadow. -

It's along the same lines of what you were saying, it was because I had two light sources.
The little semicircle of light on the right is from the light on the left and the semicircle on the left is from the light on the right.
So when I was blocking the light on the right, the shadow would be on the left side of the shoe, and vice versa. I wasn't blocking the light on the other side, which was why there was a hole in my shadow
