What is something a physically attractive and charismatic villian could do, that would make you, the audience, despise them regardless of any charisma or beauty they have?
Something they would do that would make even those of u who do like villains, seriously hate this character and route against them.
See, villainous characters can get away w a lot in a fanbase and be loved endlessly, if they have even some level charisma, charm or attractive features to the people who like them to them. And without those, they still can be loved endlessly, but it's obvious it v easily happens w villains who have "attractive" features to them, or a charismatic personality and charm. Im p sure theres a double standard going on there or whatever but lmao we will ignore that for now
So I got curious what would make people truly despise a villianous character who also had all of that charm and extras added onto them. So that all their attractive parts of their character became smeared by whatever evil thing they have done
So do tell!! Please -
i dont have the brain capacity to read this rn :p
im sowy -
Go back on their word, being hypocritical with absolutely no excuse are the first two that pop to my mind.
-
Lmao the second paragraph is a random ramble, the first part basically sums up what I was asking. Or the last part
Interesting! Thank u. Those are pretty good ones -
I disagree with Tat, being hypocritical is actually really funny to me. Just irony from a villain makes me like them a whole lot more. The worst thing is when they’ve just like hurt tons of people and have a good reason to do so, but still don’t do anything. Also when they just truthfully have no good in them, it makes me hate them. Or when they’re just plain annoying, wannabe, people. Or especially when they hurt one of the best characters or kill them for a bad reason,
Also I have a really good example of a time where a villain has just been so hated, with little fans, and just so much hate towards them lol. If you want it I can talk about it but I don’t wanna type an essay rn if you aren’t interested -
Well yeah, hurting people is obviously a no-no, especially if they're that one character that everybody loves.
I was thinking more along the lines of something like this?
You were promised that if you did something everything would turn out ok.
But it didn't, and the villain was the reason for it, and they refused to do anything about it.
During the day they're all about fairness and being blameless and not doing anything wrong, but at night they're a drug lord or run a slave trade.
I don't know, it could even be smaller than that. I'm extremely empathetic, so it's easy for me to form opinions on someone based on something little. -
Oh yeah, then I agree

Ok so I found part of a post for a really good/hated villain-
“So, he was an absolute mastermind. He wasn't just a basic movie villain, who comes out of nowhere, announces his plan of destroying/conquering something and then fails to miserably to execute it. He was right there, hiding in the plain sight, all the time. He wasn't just controlling a huge army/a single political structure. He was controlling the entire galaxy, and his plan was working so well, that he didn't need to intervene a single time in prequel trilogy, and only needed to intervene once to kick someone’s ass. He was basically the devil himself.“
I replaced the character’s name with “he” since it doesn’t make that much sense without it lol -
I think any input is a good input on what makes a villian hated to somebody. It shows an idea of what different people tolerate, and don't tolerate, or what they personally hold as important to them. And where somebody draws the line on a character. Especially if they would otherwise be, a charming character. So any ideas and examples are welcomed! Like I personally dont think a hypocritical villian in the most general sense would be something which makes ME absolutely hate them, but i can see why others would !
Hurting people is definitely off putting. I like your input as well! Also good examples :)
And I'd love to hear about the character! Please!!
I'm open to hearing about any known examples of characters who could fit the discussion, from anyone -
Oops I'm late to respond. Hold on lemme read that
-
Which part do you think out of this persons character, was the most hated part about them?? Theres a lot you could pick and choose from that blurb for why people would dislike them, and all fairly good reasons, but I'm curious to know what the biggest reason out of it all would really tie it all in together
-
Well the examples were just ones from stories I've read, not really super original, they were just the first thing that popped to mind when I was trying to make what I said on a bigger scale to show Cham that I was being pretty general and it could apply to the major things she was talking about as well.
I think just betrayal in general would go under a big one. What I said before would probably be considered as such, plus whatever else goes under the umbrella of betrayal. -
Betrayal is a strong reason to dislike a character. In many stories, a strong betrayal is used to make a favourite character, or the main character suffer and struggle. I think if a reader or watcher was following the journey of the person who got betrayed by this character, and grew attached to their story, it would be very easy to quickly despise the villian, even if the villian was liked before. In fact, if they were liked by the audience before the betrayal, it could even feel like a slight betrayal to the audience as well as the character. So betrayal is definitely a strong example I feel could be used as a way to make an attractive villian "ugly" for lack of a better word
-
If they do anything bad to innocent children or animals, that spoils everything for me
-
Ooh yeah good input. That one is an example you can even see happen irl inside prisons. Nobody likes the guy who harmed an animal or child, not even the prisoners who have harmed other people or been total menaces seem to like those guys. Theres bad and then bad.
So that one is definitely probably a pretty strong way of getting anyone to quickly despise a villian easily
