All over the US it's considered a very patriotic song because it's associated with the War of 1812 and it's like us going 🎶na-na-na-na-na🎶 to Britain.
But that wasn't what it was originally written for. It was originally written to celebrate Napoleon withdrawing from Moscow in Russia because they couldn't handle the extreme cold. It was the Russians going 🎶na-na-na-na-na🎶 to Germany.
Actually, the same thing happened with Hitler. I think it was in a similar area too. People were running away from the war like crazy because they couldn't handle the extreme cold. There were amputations happening left and right, it wasn't a very good situation.
These guys are like, "World domination!"
Then, "Oh shoot, it's cold."
Anyway, that's all besides the point.
Tchaikovsky didn't even like the song. He was paid to write a piece of music and so he did. Listen to it again and you'll find parts of it are pretty boring and it's all rather disjointed.
There's also a section that repeats itself containing part of the French National Anthem. Must have been another way to rub it in France's face. Funny how not many people have noticed that element of it.
And then I guess us Americans like the song so much we just sorta snatched it and claimed it for ourselves.
So now you know it had nothing to do with the War of 1812 between Britain and America, it had to do with Napoleon and Moscow and freezing temperatures.
