Camryn’s POV<
“I’ve never been to a dance before,” I said. School had ended previously and Emily and I were sitting on the back porch of her house swing drinking warm cappuccinos. It was a peaceful overcast day and the light breeze rustled the autumn leaves, creating a picturesque feeling.
“You haven’t? They’re fun, even if you don’t dance,” Emily said in response, taking a small sip from her cappuccino.
I chuckled. “Yeah, I doubt I’ll be dancing. I can work my legs fairly well now, but I suck at dancing. And I‘ve never learned how to waltz or anything like that, so I’ll probably just stay in my seat.”
“Well… I can teach you how to slow dance if you want. You might not use the knowledge of it all the time, but it’s useful every once in a while,” Emily said to me.
“I… sure, I guess.”
Emily smiled slightly and stood up, brushing the specks of dirt off of her skinny jeans. She looked to me and held her hand out for me to grab. Gripping her hand, I stood up and walked over to the grassy area of the backyard with caution.
“Okay,” Emily began, taking her place in front of me. “Put your left hand on my waist and grab my left hand with your right one.”
I did as she said and she did the same. Emily smiled and nodded. “Okay, I think we’re ready to begin dancing.”
Emily told me to step back once with my left foot and I did so, to which she stepped forward with her right foot. Then we both stepped to the right, then forward, then to the left, and so on. We giggled when we made mistakes, and I fell over a couple of times, but after a while I got the hang of it. The two of us fell into a smooth rhythm, and it was actually very graceful and relaxing. As we danced, it felt as if we had been dancing for ages, even though it had been only ten to fifteen minutes.
We began to dance a bit slower, and our faces got slightly closer. Just slightly. I realized something.
“There’s no music,” I mumbled softly, staring into Emily’s blue-green eyes.
“There doesn’t have to be,” Emily responded. She stared at my face and we danced for another few seconds before our faces got closer. I could feel her warm breath on my cheek; it smelled of caramel macchiato. I watched silently as her eyes dropped down to my lips and then glanced back up to my eyes. She leaned closer.
“Emily! Camryn! It’s time for dinner!” Emily’s mother called out from the back door. We jolted apart in seconds and looked over to her mother who was standing nearby.
“Oh, I’m sorry, was I interrupting anything?” She asked. Emily shook her head strongly.
“No, no, you didn’t interrupt anything. Nothing at all,” she said, looking down. I, my brain still trying to process what was just happening, stood there in mild bewilderment.
