You're being intentionally ignorant. People are mad at you for defending someone who chose to treat their friends like s---, not because you're friends with her. If you could get over yourself long enough to admit that what Espi did was wrong and that you were wrong to defend her, no one would have a problem with you continuing to be her friend.

I defend who I want. If you're mad because I'm defending my friend...
If one of you gets in a situation, wouldn't you want people to defend you? -
I'd want people to correct me if I was doing something s---ty. I expect as much from the people that are important to me.

I've never been able to tell when I make a mistake and it's really no different now. But I won't have people picking and choosing which choices I make are mistakes.
