Thread Topic: did some cool stuff today
-
I don't really want to say where I was working but it was at a legal clinic and it was cool
I did it last month too
it was just a lot, a lot a lot of filing
digital and physical
I got handle a lot of confidential files and even had to read some of them, which would have been cool except all the cases were really sad
the whole thing lasted three hours and I did scanning, renaming/organizing digital files, and pulling files from storage
it was really fun, I just wanted to share that with someone -
Work experience?
Work experience is really f---ing awesome, so I’m glad you enjoyed yours ( if that’s what it is.)
You want to be a lawyer right? -
yeah, on my paperwork what I'm doing is called "on-the-job training" which is basically what you're saying
I want to become a paralegal and maybe(?) a lawyer one day if the economy allows me to pursue that without going broke lol -
Oh , I can relate with that, a lot of people think it’s boring but if you choose the right place then f--- it’s the best!
That actually sounds really interesting, I want to be a teacher but my cousin is a lawyer,
What’s a paralegal? -
a paralegal is like an assistant to the lawyer who actually does a lot of the lawyer's work. if you ever need a lawyer, you'll most likely deal with the paralegal more often than you'll deal with the actual lawyer (if they have a paralegal)
they usually write most of the letters, sometimes interview clients, handle the paperwork, format documents, etc. so basically almost everything a lawyer does but without giving actual legal advice/offering their own opinion
that's a really condensed explanation and may not be wholly accurate but yeah, kind of like the lawyer's right-hand-man -
Is this an American thing?( I did a year of modern studies, so I know absolutely nothing about my own legal system beyond laywyer prosecuter fiscal and judge jury and stuff.)
So would that be in a specific kind of thing?
Like a defence or divorce or is it only lawyers that have that kind of thing? -
umm idk, I think so? not sure if they have paralegals in other countries. it's a relatively new profession. I'm American and they have them here is all I know
and any kind of lawyer can employ a paralegal, it doesn't matter what area of law they practice. -
Sorry, if I’m bugging you, I forgot that google is a thing.
It sounds like something you are interested in, which is always a good choice. -
i'v considered trying to become a lawyer.
-
probably won't though because it's expensive.
-
yes, I love it. every time I step foot in the clinic I just feel my heart swell with happiness and love. if I could drown myself in the legal profession I would, I just love it all so much.
you should try if you can! but keep in mind that the workforce is saturated with lawyers these days so becoming successful is really hard. if you love it enough though, you should go for it -
Yes!! That sounds amazing!! I'm so glad you're enjoying it!! Uhhh I forget how often you go but you should tell me about it every time
