Thread Topic: What should I do?

One_of_you NewbieI'm not really sure that the title should be "what should I do" because I'm not really sure if I should intrude upon their business. But I'm still looking for help, I guess.
So there's this person that I know in school who keeps hurting themself by punching themself and scratching themself as self punishment. I don't know if I should interfere because I'm not really a friend. I'm concerned that there is a bigger issue and they are really self-harming. It's been going on for a year or so.
I am not comfortable with sharing my identity so I am posting anonymously.
Thank you. -
I would tell a trusted adult or teacher at school, maybe even a guidance counselor. You definitely shouldn't do nothing though. Showing concern towards another person is one of the best things you can do regardless if you're friends or not. I'm sure that they'd greatly appreciate you looking out for a fellow classmate, and I'm sure that the student would appreciate it too.

One_of_you NewbieI know that the teachers know this is happening. I think they just dismiss it as a temper tantrum (which it kind of is because they only do it when they make a mistake)

imo, telling a teacher can be worse. I know that I had to beg my friends not to tell anyone when I hit such a bad low and went and hurt myself. I got better on my own.
That being said, this person sounds like they aren't going to get better, and I feel like you should approach them about it if you're brave enough. Maybe just offer to be a friend, to be there, even if you don't know them well. Worst case scenario, they push you away and ask you to leave them alone. -
One_of_you NewbieI know that person is pretty independent and I don't think that they want help. In the past, they lashed out at someone trying to help them pick something up that they dropped. I think they have really low self confidence and often (in front of the class sometimes) hit themself when they make a mistake. Recently, they still hit themself even when they hadn't done anything wrong, really.
For example:
Once, they punched themself for not having the exact answer that a teacher wanted. They were still right, though.
Usually it's only when they mess up in front of the class. -
One_of_you NewbieI'm also kind of worried that they might be doing physical damage to themself. Recently, they've been punching themself in the head repeatedly. Will that cause head/ brain damage?

One_of_you NewbieAnother question.
Is this just teenage hormones? -

How hard are they punching themselves? can you see anything more than just small bruises?
-
One_of_you Newbie@bouncebakk what do you mean?
@Faceless Knight hard enough to make a sound, seems to be just a red mark -
That sounds like it's not a real problem unless they start doing anything like cutting. From what you're saying I wouldn't be worried, but I couldn't really judge unless I was there.
