one of them is about mermaids and these kids find they have mer blood and they find out their grown-up friend has mer blood too, and that he has a family in Qua, the mermaid place, and they help him find his kids

Well, Darren Shan wrote a series called the Cirque Du Freak series, and the film was based off of those books.
I have every single book Darren Shan has ever written. I'm on book 10 of the Cirque Du freak series. ^_^ -

They are very cool, he also has a series of ten books called The Demonata, I haven't read it, but it's supposed to be super scary.
He also has a new book called The Thin Executioner
Did I mention that I met him? LOL, he signed book 3 of the Cirque Du Freak series saying:
