Prologue
Susannah cautiously watched as the Elders of her people read her statement. She inspected all the members to see if the cold and hardened faces seemed to soften even the slightest. The youngest of the Elevens eyes watered meagerly as she discreetly wiped the tears. Even herself knew if the Elders discovered Eden showing any affections toward the alleged criminal, she would be immediately exiled along with Susannah. For one; will cause a reaction out of the civilians, another and most important, will be striped of their title and sent on their way, without a trial. Perhaps they may be a bit more lenient with Elders, but it wasnt possible that Eden would be spared, or showed mercy of any kind. Ignorance of the Law is no excuse. A mantra that Susannahs and her peoples parents burned into their minds before they could spoil their diaper.
Once more, Susannah watched the Elders before her, some barely made a move toward sympathy. Young Eden looked at Susannah, saw pity in her eyes. Possibly because the daughter Susannah attempted to steal, was Edens and Asas. It was a rare occurrence a human would try to snag one of the children, centuries of names and hatred caused her people to flee into the shadows. Sharing the tunnels with the rats and mice. Nonetheless, even more so when one of their own, tried. There were often stories Susannah heard, her parents read at bedtime about ones who betrayed their own, most in the stories were sentenced to death, or worse. Death wasnt as bad as some may see it, you will get stoned. But the Elders never let the children indulge into the act. Even if Eden is barely an adult, she is part of the Elders, and must do her duty. If you get exiled, somehow you are made to live in the human world. Forced to blend in, and deal with all the mundane activities. Children, career. No purpose, just taking up space.
Her father would say how the mundane world grew, but no progress was made. Wars, fires, killings. He spouted how humans were a waste, and if someone would just kill them all, the world, the people, will be free. He yelled the words until he discovered his daughter, she is human. How her abilities werent dormant. They werent even there to begin with.
Her father tried ways to give her something. Blood from him. It worked. Nobody realized. Some were gullible to believe it was late blooming, ---it can happen, but not that late---others had theories. Like Eden. She tried to prove and prove that Susannah was using blood. Injecting herself with it. Things like that, were worse than incest. Injecting yourself with someone elses blood was frowned upon. Asa, before he even heard of the brilliant Eden, was the closest thing to a friend Susannah ever had. Believed she was in love with him. Asa tried different ways, after her father had shot himself--- the pain of having a human daughter was too much to bear---, using his blood. Tried getting others to join in, but no one wanted to join in such an act.
After another year, Asa gave in, claimed defeat, and found someone who could give him a child of magic, Eden. Two of the brightest, being together. Invited to all the sacred rituals, and very confidential cases. The ones Susannah longed for.
Decades has passed. Asa and Eden announced their engagement, soon after a little baby wrapped in a pink blanket was born into the world. Many had said this was finally the beginning, as if multiple births hadnt happened in the past hundreds of years. They celebrated/ Cheered. But Asa and Eden could never choose a name that fit the perfect child/ Multiple suggestions were made, but nothing ever stuck. Susannah knew the name, knew what she would call the child, Vanessa.
Finally Eden discovered a name, Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law, justice, strength, war strategy, the arts, crafts, mathematics, and skill. Eden intended for the name of her child to have meaning, she and Asa believed Athena would bring them out of this hiding. But so much to put on a newborn child. One who was worshipped as a queen. Showered with gifts Susannahs family couldnt even dream of.
Susannah contemplated her choices after the child was born. She heard stories of Athena doing unimaginable things. Healing ones on the break of death with just a simple smile. Eden and Asa encouraged her to continue. To try and make something else happen. Susannahs jealousy grew to heights way beyond it was ever before. She planned and planned, searched the libraries for answers on how these things Athena did so easily. Nothing was heard, or even mentioned of a four-month old child healing a person by smiling.
Susannah thought for a second, if Athena could heal, then perhaps she can do other things. No one would know what heights her powers could reach. It was possible Susannah could finally have abilities, wind bending, control of the seas, shape shifting. The possibilities were endless. She asked herself the same question; How will I get her blood? But there were more; How much blood do I need to take? How many injections? Will I have to wait for her abilities to mature like everyone elses?
The idea of power drove Susannah crazy. She couldnt take the thought of the solution of her problem is sitting in a crib drooling. Being civil was no longer in the conversation. Susannah intended to take the child away. Run to the mundane world, start a life. Slowly ever so slowly, she would finally have the power she craved.
The Elder cleared his throat, wrinkles clouded his face, tiredness set into his eyes, the job has taken its toll. Susannah Anne Crassus, you are hereby exiled for an act of treason, and will be banned from our lands. You are sentenced to live in the mundane society for eighteen years, anyone who contacts or reaches out to Miss Crassus will be charged with treason and stoned The Elder looked down at her, pity in his eyes, lowering his voice, Good luck, Susannah.
Chapter 1
Nessa crept into the living room. The four Budweisers she had along with the shots of vodka did her no justice walking into the darkness of the house. Edging along, groping every nearby object, Nessa made her way toward the kitchen. Dodging the occasional random item no one bothered to pick up, Nessa slid past Bears cage. The old black dog had been alive for almost as long as she has, half-blind, aging, and weak. She begged her mother to put him down. Take him out of him out of his misery, but she insisted on that Nessa heal him in some way. Nessa laughed to herself at the thought. She knew her adoptive mother had her problems, like anyone, but to heal someone, an animal on its deathbed is absurd.
Nessas smile wavered as she recognized the photo of her mother and herself standing in front of the beach. The young womans wrinkles were barely noticeable then, not a touch of gray in her snow white blond hair, the blue in her eyes was brighter, the smile appeared to be true. Not forced as it has been for years. Nessa still wondered where that woman was, and if she knew another stranger has taken her place. But Levi always told her, Do not dwell in the past, Nessie. Do not focus on the future. Stay in the present, and only the present. Nessa would laugh at Levi for saying to stay in the present. She would tell him, Even if I would try, Levi, I will still be in the present. Theres no such thing as time travel. Nonetheless, they would giggle.
Nessa adored the way Levi laughed. How he seemed to do it without a concern if he over exaggerated, or just made a noise. He always seemed to be at ease with himself, in full control. Nessa expressed how she felt to her beloved brother, he told her not to worry. That soon she will be in control over herself. She did not quite understand what he had meant by it. Although, Nessa wanted to pick his brain until he gave her an actual answer, and not one filled with riddles, Levi disappeared. Nessa knew where he went. Who he was seeing this time was unknown, but she -
never sees the same girl twice.
Nessa wondered where Levi went to with these beautiful girls he claimed as easily as breathing. She would ask, but Levi would shove it off and switch to another subject. Levi was going to leave once more, and once more Nessa ask. All he would say was, Ill be back in an hour. Tell mum I went to Rickys to study. Nessa havent had a theory for why Levi would leave. Or why he would lie to mum. She knew Levi wasnt going to dare tell her, and Nessa needed to know why.
When Levi left once again, Nessa decided to follow. She didnt know why Levi was being so secretive about his activities. Even when Nessa and Levi arent blood related, they both told each other every detail on how they felt, who they liked. Everything.
With a look Levi knew what Nessa was thinking, and vice versa. But lately, Nessa would look at Levi, and could not tell what he was thinking. His deep blue eyes were clouded, unreadable. It drove Nessa to the edge of insanity not knowing what he was thinking. Or who he was thinking about.
Nessa carefully followed Levi, she knew the terrain well, so did Levi. It wasnt needed for Nessa to constantly watch where her feet stepped. She knew the holes, what place they were in, and how deep. She knew it all, but this time she needed to not make a sound. Levi appeared to be in no rush to get to his destination, but Nessa was. Five hours their mother would wake, when she realizes Nessa isnt underneath her large black comforter, Hell will be raised.
A little over an hour, Nessa recognized the trees, the gravel, even the way the sky bends across the sky. They were at most a mile away from the train tracks. A place Nessa goes to cool down. But curiosity rushed through Nessas veins as she stepped over the rotting fallen tree. She wondered why Levi was here. He always said the abandoned house would make him anxious. Even looking at it he claimed to feel the cold of the spirits wandering inside the house. Nessa knew no one had died in the house, but every time Levi would look at the house, fear was written in his eyes in black marker.
Not today. Fear wasnt even in the area by his body language. He strode towards the house lifting one leg over the large fence, then the other, he opened the door, disappearing into the darkness. Nessa followed him, doing the same technique to get back the fence. She looked up at the house, she imagined that it was once pretty, taken cared for.
Sighing Nessa walked up the stairs, the old wood moaning underneath the pressure of her feet. The smell of feces and mildew filled her nostrils, as she moved away from the door into the shadows.
As Nessa continued to walk, the smell worsened, growing more powerful by the second. The stench was overpowering any decent smell in the area, Nessa reached the top of the stairs, lifting her shirt up to her nose, she breathed in the smell of fresh Gain.
A high-pitched scream filled Nessas ears, the noise brought chills through her spine, her blood grown cold. Another scream followed. Another. Another. And another. An endless amount of screams filled the hollow walls. Once after another. Nessa was more curious than anything, fear trialed to overtake her, Nessas heart beat was beyond normality, she edged closer to where the screams originated.
Nessa stared at the dark wooden door before her, the screams did not seem to cease. Indecisively she stood, curiosity compelled her to move her feet. She slowly turned the doorknob, the door moved slowly with slight moaning. As the door opened to its full capacity, the sight in front of her, she recoiled at.
Before her was Levi. And another girl. Straddling. Her red hair curtained around her back falling onto her adoptive brothers face, but he appeared to not mind. A strong hunger was in his eyes as he looked upon the girl in front of him. Both too focused on the sin they were committing, no one recognized the door open, and the sixteen year old girl standing in the doorway.
The sight squeezed at her heart. She knew Levi was her brother. It wasnt blood, but she knew it was wrong. She grew to love him. They both said it often, but Nessa did not think more on it. Think of saying, I love you was any more than saying it to your mother or father. But the scene in front of her brought emotions she havent felt since Sawyer. Ones she grew to control over the year, but once more it all had overtaken her. She fought herself, and commanded to not shed a tear
Her tries were futile and tears streamed down her cheeks. Her voice made a small whine, and all the screams stopped.
Nessie? Levis face was shocked. Emotions masked his eyes; Regret, shock, but still the hunger was there.
Nessa did not dare to speak, but walked away slamming the door shut behind her. She heard faint voices, and her name over and over again.
Chapter 2
Tears ran down Nessas already tear stained face as she sat in her room cuddled into a ball in the corner. Her face was exhausted, her legs sore. Every muscle in her body begged for relief, but she could not will herself to move. The iron will and determination she once had, there was longer a trace. Deep inside of her, she knew she was overreacting. It was a second nature to the male sex, even age that age. Despite the constant pain in her legs, Nessas mouth was dry. Which pleaded for a glass of water.
Nessas legs wobbled as she walked out of her room into the darkened hallway. About a little after four, the sun still has not risen, part of Nessa did not want the sun to rise. It would cause for another day, another day with Levi.
Not bothering with lights, Nessa made her way down the stairs, every step was painful, her shoulders sagged, her posture poor. Worst of all the tightness in her stomach did not vanish, she tried Advil, Ibuprofen. As if love is something that can remedied by any of the contents found in a first aid kit. Once more her tries were pointless. She knew the feeling would always be there.
Emotions filled her as Nessa saw the light in the kitchen on. Not wanting another confrontation with her mother, Nessa turned away.
Nessie.
The two syllables, the way the name rolled off his tongue, it was Levi. Nessa refused to turn around, for fear that she may cry. She cleared her throat, trying to not show any indication of hurt.
Yes? She replied quietly, forcing herself not to break.
I-. He was lost for words, Nessa knew it, but maybe she did not.
A sudden jolt of heat ran through Nessas veins, and she could not control it. Nessa whipped her head around to look her dear brother in the eyes.
Were you going to say sorry? Nssa demanded,That you lied to me. You lied to mum. You lied to everyone. To me! To me, Levi. Does that mean anything to you anymore? We told each other, secrets and secrets. And I expected you would keep them. You didnt. You shared that place with her! I told you that expecting you would keep it...but I thought wrong. I thought I knew you. I thought I DID! Nessa dug her nails into her hand, backing up,But I didnt. I dont know you....and I never will. I wont. Nessa shook her head, backing up farther. And to think, I thought I was in love with you Nessa muttered softly to herself.
She could not will herself to meet Levis eyes. She would sob, to look into the eyes that had a thirst for the beauty he had on his lap. Nessa will think of his eyes, no longer the innocent intoxicating blue before, a hungry grey that she could not bare herself to stare into anymore.
She felt Levis hand at the small of her back, she did not move into his grace. She did not welcome it.
Nessie. The six letters forced the tears to fall. She gave in. She gave in once again. Once more to the beautiful blonde demon.
I love you. He murmured, kissing her forehead.
Seconds later, Nessa knew. He tricked her once more. This was the last time. She shook her head, saying in her mind no. Over and over again. No..No...No...NO! Nessa pushed him away. No, Levi! No. You d -
o not get it...I just dont love- Am I going to say it? Can I say it? I just dont love you, Levi. Im in love with you. She whispered the last sentence quietly, but the expression that lay upon Levis face, told Nessa he heard every word she said. Nessa shed her bitter tears.
She slid to the ground, pulling her aching knees to her stomach, sobbing into the sleeves of her IU hoodie.
Nessa awoke to the curtains drawn, concealing the sunlight. Good, she thought, I do not think I can face the day today. The drinking yesterday brought Hell and served it today. Her head ached, the dizziness overwhelmed her when she stood. The constant feeling of hurling did her no good, but it let her lie in bed, underneath the covers, and free from the blue eyes.
Levi.. She did not want to think about him, about he tried to comfort her, and Nessa swatted him away. Nessa remembers it all. Levi walked in minutes ago, asked if she remembered what occurred last night. Nessa lied. Claimed that she only remembers getting a glass of water in the kitchen, but there was nothing else.
A knock at her door brought her attention back into her room, the pathetic little thing. The room was barely big enough to fit three grown people, let alone a dresser which took most of the area.
Come in. Her voice was hoarse. Her eyes were puffy, tear-streaked, her body hurt, the last thing she needed, nor wanted, was to be visited by anyone.
The door opened, revealing a clean shaven Levi. His white-blonde hair like his mothers styled messy as if on purpose, his eyes sparkled like before, as if last night did not even happen, a blue plaid shirt that matched his eyes, stretched across his chest. Dark fitted jeans engulfed his every curve. In his thin elegant hands held a red bowl with steam flowing at the top.
He stood there casually for a moment before his eyes rested on hers, she felt as if he could read what she was thinking. His eyes had a shine of wonder and curiosity before it disappeared with the normal sparkle.
He started walking closer to Nessa, before setting down the bowl down on her nightstand. Scoot over, dork. He teased, Nessa complied, moving to the right to give more space for Levi.
Levi moved onto her bed, messing up her covers, Nessa made a noise. Levi turned his head to the side, then looked down to the blankets, and laughed.
You are weird, Nessie. He laughed once more, and once more the laugh is like angels singing.
You are too, weirdo. Nessa laughed punching his right arm with her left hand.
He frowned at the place Nessa punched him, for a second Nessa thought she did something wrong, but soon his frown turned into a goofy grin that was too big for his face.
Really, Nessie? I have the upperhand here. Levi claimed smiling.
Nessa returned the smile and nodded, Yes, but doesnt mean I dont know your weak spots.
Sweetheart, I know everything about you. Nessas cheeks grew hot at the mention of sweetheart.
Nessas smiled still stayed, but grew and grew. Levis grin disappeared, and a look of worry replaced the sparkle.
I know that look. And dont you dare.
Should I? I think I should. Dont you? She asked sarcastically.
Um, no! If you try, Ill do this. His hands went to her side and immediately Nessa knew she was in trouble.
Levi! Nessa yelled, but no before his hands started moving around her sides, his fingers digging into her ribs. Laughter, uncontrollable laughter came from Nessa. Which soon brought on a round of snorting. Nessa squirmed and squirmed, but she was still underneath her comforter.
Not getting away, Red! He yelled pressing harder.
Please. Im going to pee! Nessa lied, his hands left her sides in a fast motion. There still was the heat from his hands on her waist. She longed for them to be there again.
Really? Levi raised an eyebrow.
Nope. Nessa replied, exaggerating the p. Before Levi could tickle her again, Nessa jumped off her bed, but completely forgot the hangover she still had. The feeling of puking overwhelmed Nessa, she felt her dinner come up. She could not force it down, and it went up. Levis hands were already around her before she could blink, half carrying her, and pushing her hair out of her face.
Levi led her to the bathroom, where the toilet lay. He set her down carefully, holding her hair back, while Nessa clung to the toilet releasing the very few contents in her stomach. She felt as if someone is stabbing knives into her brain, looking for the answers.
Minutes went by before Nessa stopped. The taste of vomit was in her mouth and was not disappearing for a long time. Her body went limp, and fell against Levi.
That was gross. Im sorry. Nessa apologized, she felt obligated to.
Dont be. You got drunk. It happens. He smiled, putting his head against her shoulder.
Thats not what I mean. Nessa whispered.
Then why?
For last night. I dont only remember going into the kitchen. I remember it it all. And I am really sorry. I shouldnt have said any of it. You are my brother, you are sixteen. Youll have sex. It wasnt my place. Youre my brother. And I have accepted that. Nessa lied and lied, Did I really accept it? Do I believe he will be nothing more? Do I want him to be something more? Yes. Yes. She longs for something more with him, but Levi cannot know that. I should not have said it. I know it wasnt...how can I say this? I just wish that you will forgive-
Her words were cut off by Levis lips pressed against hers. The feeling was way more than she imagined. His lips were soft, and fit perfectly hugging hers. Running his fingers through her hair, how she wished his hands lay on her sides. As if he read her mind he wrapped his hands around her hips and pulled her close, hard. His chest against hers, she felt his heartbeat, beating faster and faster.
Levi pulled away, Nessa almost whimpered, but had to stop herself, both breathed heavily. Foreheads pressed against each other, gazing heavily into each other's eyes. -
you're going to continue it, right?
-
Yeah. Did you like it?
