Fyrian Lore time:
Twins are the norm in the royal family. In fact, both Guinevere and Curiosity had twins. But because of a law that was abolished when Guin came into rule, both Guin and Ross's "lesser" twins were killed at birth.
Lesser Twin is a term for the twin born in the royal family who's powers awaken late, or are born without the emblem. Basically, they're considered inferior and a disgrace to the family.
Razkoas, however, refused to marry Guin unless the act was abolished. So, when Arinn and Kael were born, Kael was allowed to live. Although, he was raised as a second class citizen and when Arinn was sent to become the new Hiro, or religious leader, Kael was effectively kicked out of the manor to figure s--- out on his own.
Similar story for Hephaestus and Karma. Karma was the lesser twin, so she was ignored throughout her childhood by everyone except Heph. As kids Heph and Karma were attached at the hip, which caused an uproar for those used to the tradition of there only being one "chosen" twin.
For a while Heph and Karma got away with it, until one day Karma was 'kidnapped'. Heph, 15 at the time, planned to set off to find her, but ended up being sent away to Sage's house to study under him.
Skip about 100 years, and Heph came into power, and Karma showed back up at the manor, angry and now black haired but still the same demon.
Heph effectively abolished the whole idea of lesser twins. When Hale and Zanna were born, Guin's last set of twins, they were treated as equals. Both are considered princesses, and though Zanna is technically the Lesser twin, you'd never know. -

This is why Kael is rarely ever seen on Fyre, and always seems angry [or drunk].
Also why Karma isn't Queen, and why she feels the need to prove herself constantly against Heph. -
