well, it all depends. the towel isnt the weapon. it's the tool.
if anything you can safely use it to hold the zombies head while you throw it down to the ground. at the same time you will be protected from bites and muffling its moans so there wont be more. -
It'd be way easier to just wear resistant clothing and smasht it's skull with a bat right away so you can stay farther from it too.

but its harder to find resistant cloths and the towel has plenty of other uses just for survival.
and if you're using resistant clothing you are pulling in other things other than your weapon.
If i had the choice i would use resistant clothing too. but with nothing but a melee weapon i would choose a towel. -

Ok lets say you do grab a zombie and don't get bit throwing him to the ground, how do you plan to kill it? Are you gonna stomp on its head like 5 times taking up more time and energy rather than just ending it quick with one or two hits from a bat? What if others are coming at you while you're still dealing with the first one? -
well outside of zombie fighting, a towel can be used as clothing, can be used for shelter, to carry stuff, shade, to dry with, ect.
you dont have to kill the zombie. survival comes first. once its down you have won. at that point, you can run and hope to find a more efficient way to dispatch them on your way back to your camp.

A towel doesn't remotely make good shelter though.
You'd need to kill it so it didn't see which way you left though. I'd serious any day take a blunt object over a towel dude.

i cannot think of one situation a towel doesn't come in handy...plus a handful of salty nuts
