I on the countertop, the one in my kitchen, fiddling with my fingers in anticipation. The anxiety. I was almost shaking, as if I were hyper, but no, it was not from being hyper. Just anxious. It was around the time of 2:38 AM, as it read on the clock. Late, but why. James Anderson and Nix Paulson were usually reliable, on-time, very professional-like with their… “workâ€. Maybe they have encountered a problem, I began to realize. Witnesses were probably the only trouble they could come across, and if witnesses were the issue, most witnesses are easy to… rid of. I clinched my fists, the anxiety almost hurting. I realize now how impatient I can be, how anxious I get. This was overwhelming me, they should have been here earlier like planned. Just as I began to walk back and forth across the kitchen, upset, a knock at the door. I was practically sprinting to the door, to let them inside, first Nix Paulson who was looking a bit mad and then James Anderson, who also shared the same frustrated expression on his face. I invited them to sit on the couch so we could discuss matters.
James Anderson was the first who spoke, “You lied to us.â€
Nix Paulson spoke next. “Andrew Mark was the guy.â€
I smiled, and responded, “I know. But he’s gone, am I right?â€
James Anderson and Nix Paulson exchanged looks… angrily. Nix Paulson sat there and James Anderson slumped in the couch frustrated, like a small child would when they do not get what they want. I almost wanted to laugh and explain to James Anderson how he reminded me a little boy getting frustrated, but I held my tongue.
Nix Paulson spoke out again, “We made a mistake though.â€
I closed my eyes and rubbed the back of my neck then looked up again at both the men. “Excuse me? What mistake?†and I sat there with my heart trying to jump out of my chest. This made me nervous. With such an important deed, mistakes are not allowed to be made. Or else I could get caught. Or else we could get caught. There was no answer, so I said again only louder, and more frustration to my tone, “What Mistake?â€
James Anderson cleared his throat, looked down at the ground, and said without even looking me in the eye, “We killed the wrong guy.†-
