There Was Fire

So we have lost it all-
everything that we once had.
But you took the hardest fall
trying to get it all back.
While we all turned away,
our eyes blinded by the smoke.
You pretended there was faith,
until your fire went stone cold.
Now you deny that there was ever a flame,
say it was just in my head that you would fight.
But there was fire in those eyes,
eyes I'd thought had looked so dead.
And it's not pills or tears or wine
that is painting them so red.
I know you'd sooner give it up
than have to stand alone and fight.
And though you say there was never hope,
I remember there was fire. -
