Through those long years, he said finally that he had enough of all the conflict.
"You're so stupid!" and "Get a real job!". "Have I told you I hate you?" or "You're not even our real parent!"
Really, for so many years, he had taken these insults from two little human beings. Children, they did not know what they were saying, he thought as first. But the twins grew older, he'd know they did.
The young boy had started, first with small, pitiful insults, like "You look a little weird" or "You're scary." But it continued on to be things such as "Stupid! You're so stupid!"
The sister to the boy only followed along to this, feeling it was funny, feeling it was necessary. The intensity of her insults also grew, to the point were they were also very hurtful.
They grew to be almost adults, and yet even if they should have matured, they did not.
They do not realize how lucky they are, the man would think. They do not realize I have saved them.
Both were orphans on the street at a young age, both starving and in need of someone to take care of them. Both parents were part of ruthless groups, they had been murdered. The children were scared to go anyone for help, they feared they may be taken to the police.
The man had spotted them, and with such sorrow building in his soul, he took them in without further word. And how he loved them both, the two little twins.
But they did not love him.
They tried to find faults with the man to make him feel bad. They made fun of everything they could possibly make fun of. At first he realized they were only children and it was only a phase, but it did not stop, it did not end. It only continued and grew worse.
When they left the age of being a teenager, he thought that for sure, maybe now they would finally give up. It did not happen. They continued.
"Hey, dips---, mind getting me some soda?" the boy spat venomously, rolling his eyes at how scrawny the figure of the father had gotten through stress. The sister laughed at her brother's comments and watched as the father grabbed a can of soda and threw it over.
"There you go, son."
"Whatever."
Months passed and they turned 18. Now the man thought, why do I still keep them here? They are adults, they can live by themselves.
But he realized he couldn't. He feared he would be lonely for the rest of the years. He wanted someone to be around him, even if they treated him badly. But a part of him told him it was the right thing.
One day they were returning from a trip with friends. The man waited for them to knock at they door. He stood by the window.
They came, and tried to open the door. It was locked. They knocked. The man did not answer. They began to scream at him to open the door when they saw him by the window.
And he said
"I will not open this door. You two have grown up, and yet you haven't moved out. I expect you two to get a job, if you are always bragging about how you an get a job better than mine.
Also, in this house, I want respect. You have not respected me in so many years. I do not accept this.
All these years you two have taken me for granted. Well, now you will see how lucky you were to have had me. Come back to me when you have learned your lesson."
And he left the window.
Is he crazy? they thought. Had he gone insane? He is not serious.
But he was.
They tried many times to get to him, but they could not. They had to both get jobs to live on, but they still tried to contact him.
Later on, the house seemed to be getting dustier by the day. They grew curious and asked a neighbor where he was.
"Bless that man's generous heart, he has passed on my children," she told them, seeming to be very sorrowful. "He was so stressed, so tired, and so lonely. We tried to make him go out, he said he did not want to go out. A few weeks ago, we found him dead, clutching a little stuffed bear at his bed."
They did not know how to react.
But they found, later on, that their father was right about them taking him for granted. They had to learn it the hard way.
