Once there was a horse named Francois. He and his mother were owned by a mean old farmer, Ben. One tragic day, Francois' mother was killed from being whipped to much. Francois was left by himself. He did work for the farmer, even though he wished he didn't have to. "I'll do it for mother." he thought. On one cold December day, the farmer decided he would have Francois pull the plow. He started pulling, but It was just so slippery. He slipped and fell. The farmer went crazy! He whipped and whipped and whipped until he thought Francois was dead. The next day, or maybe it was a couple of days later, Francois awoke from laying where the farmer had whipped him. He tried to get up but he was too weak. A tear dropped from his eye. He was going to die and there was nothing he could do about it. But then he thought of his poor mother. He thought of how she had always told him to have courage. "This is for you, mother." he thought. He got up and walked over to the farmer's house. He could barely stand. He let out a loud cry and the farmer rushed out of his house. Francois was scared. But he had courage. He walked over to the farmer, limping. He stopes right in front of him. What was he going to do to him? He had killed his mother and nearly him, too. He looked at the farmer put his ears back and backed up. The farmer thought for sure he was done for. But, no. he wouldn't. He couldn't do anything to Ben. Even though he had been so cruel to him, he was still his owner. He bowed his head in a sign if forgiveness. The farmer fell to his knees in disbelief. Francois bravely walked away. He came to a field of grass. He tried to eat some but felt too weak. "Francois," he heard. He looked up to a white horse. "Come with me," it said. The white horse flew into the sky. He followed. He looked down and saw his body. He had died. He followed the white horse into a place in the clouds. There were many, many, other horses. He saw his mother. "Mother!" he yelled as tears pored out of his eyes. He ran to her and she cried with him. "Francois," she said. "You are now free."
