Chapter One
The Door
I walked over to the class room. Knocked, and entered.
The teacher looked up at me, sighed and said, "Alright Rive, go ahead and take a seat,"
Nobody dared sneer or smirk as I walked past the tables right down to the last one, sitting next to me was a girl with long wavy reddish orange hair to her waist, really pale skin, freckles and dark blue eyes, Paige Anderson. One of my three best friends.
Since I came here, I've had three friends. Paige, who sat next to me, she had saved me from a fight and we'd been friends ever since.
Then there was Sabelle Perring, she was plump and a bit fat, although I liked her fat, with straight black hair that ended a few inches after her shoulder, she had very light icy blue eyes, and when she'd tap me on the shoulder and I'd turn around to face her, her eyes would scare the s--- out of me.
Sabelle was one of the smartest girls I knew, she helped me whenever I was struggling, and helped me cheat for tests, she was my life saver.
Sabelle was being picked on one day by an annoying prep I didn't like, her name was Jacoba Dingwell, and she drove me crazy, she was always prancing around, and pretended to be some fashionista diva or what not, once, she drove me so mad that I punched her in the face, those 10 days of suspension were so worth it, because she always steered clear from me.
But she was picking on Sabelle and calling her fat and blobby, Sabelle even cried. So then I walked up to Jacoba, gave her a push, pulled out my sandwich, and stuck the two mayonnaise covered breads on to her cheeks, and the rest of the contents (which were chicken, lettuce, tomatoes and cheese) in her hair, and then ruffled it up, took Sabelle's hand and walked down the corridor in to the bathroom.
There, I washed her face because she'd cried a little, and told her it would be Ok.
"Thanks," she smiled.
And then, she shared me her lunch because I'd sacrificed mine to save her, and we were friends ever since.
And the last of my three friends, and the quirkiest, was Xue Stadder. Her name began with an X, how cool was that? She said her name meant, "Snow," so we had taken to calling her snow white, although she had dark brown skin, and chocolate colored eyes, with thick black curly hair that only reached her shoulders and no more, she was a bit of a girly girl, but we didn't mind.
How did I meet her? She was a new girl at school, so me, Sabelle and Paige jumped in and made friends with her, so then the preps didn't sneer.
Anyway, I sat next to Paige.
She stared at me, with her chair leaned back, her book wasn't opened and the teacher was reading, the only smart one between us four was Sabelle who sat two tables in front of us.
"What did you do this time?" she whispered to me.
"I only wrote on the walls," I said, "I was going to write something funny but Ms. Olive Landy caught me as I wrote the first word,"
"Why did you even write in the first place?" she whispered, glaring at the teacher who didn't notice us, "You could have just written in the bathroom or behind a bin you know,"
"I don't know," I said, "I was just bored… And I needed a nap,"
"7 year olds like scribbling, don't they?" a voice boomed, I looked up from my desk, and so the teacher staring at us both.
We both shut up after that, not saying a word throughout the lesson.
After it came the second break, this day is whizzing by so lovely, plus, the last period will be empty because the teacher's sick. And we had something special planned for today.
Xue had asked permission to go to the toilet, but since she was new she got lost and often wondered down the wrong corridor, and ended up in the abandoned part of the school, where the closet was for punishments. She was about to turn round and head back when she had a sudden urge to go down the dark corridor… Wherever it led to…
Her footsteps echoed as she walked down the corridor, she had heard a whisper, unsure of where it came from… It called her name, almost fiercely, almost as if commanding her to come…
"Xue… I call for you…"
It was faint, but definitely there, calling her over and over she was about to scream and run away, but she kept urging herself to walk on, although frozen and stiff with fright as she was, heart racing and blood curdling as it was, she couldn't run.
She went down the corridor and passed by all the doors on either side, all of them were open, all of them empty and dusty and filled with cobwebs.
The wall that she was walking towards was bare, but the whisper was calling her, urging her to come forward… Making her body move for its benefit and not hers…
Then, she reached the end of the corridor.
One door to the left. One door to the right.
The one to the left was the closet, but the door to the right was the only one that was locked and couldn't be opened.
She began to pant for breath, her heart beating quicker and quicker like a drum.
"They say perfection is right around the corner…" It said to her, she wanted to turn and run away, but her legs were stuck to the ground, she was frozen.
Then, from the opposite side of the locked door, somebody knocked.
They knocked again.
The third knock.
Then, it began to bang loudly, like someone was kicking it with their foot from the other side.
"…Only one thing to make this perfection…"
She was too stunned and scared to speak, full of shock and fear, a lump formed in her throat and it was like she forgot how to talk and how to breathe and was just about ready to collapse to the floor.
And so she did.
The corners of her sight went black, like darkness surrounding, the world was spinning and her vision went blurry… Then she felt her legs give in, and she fell to the ground and collapsed on the cold white tiles, in the darkness.
She said the last thing she remembered was a black rose, she hadn't seen it, but every time she tried to recall what happened back there, a black rose came to her mind, abandoned, left to die and wither, like it hadn't been tended to in years.
Like the room that lay beyond the locked door.
When she hadn't showed up by the end of period, everyone wondered where she was, and soon, when Ms. Olive Landy was dragging a blond girl by the hair towards the closet, she saw Xue lying there, motionless, not moving, just… dead and lifeless.
That was the first time I saw Ms. Olive Landy run, and from That day, I was scarred for life.
Xue had been taking to the nurse's room to recover, and me, Paige and Sabelle that came to visit her at break time, we didn't really like playing outside in the play ground with others anyway, we just walked around and talked.
If Xue hadn't been breathing, I thought she would have been dead. Her face stone, her lips trembled and sometimes opened a notch, like she was trying to speak but she was held back by something in her sleep. And there were lines on her face that suggested she was scared. I wondered if she was having a nightmare.
She wasn't awake by the time the bell rang, nor was she when her dad came to pick her up, he was so concerned about her, he took her to the hospital and she came back a week later. The last time I saw her, she had pigtails and wore small pink bracelets under the cuffs of her white school shirt and smiled sweetly at everyone who made eye contact with her, but now…
She had bags under her eyes, her hair was messy and she looked tired.
"Louder… the whispers… they just kept taunting me, saying stuff I don't remember, raising their voices… The days just went by so fast… it seems… like the whispers were just… j-j-ust… a minute ago or so…"
She was so shaken, she didn't pay attention i
