It’s Not Over Yet
Luna sat at the edge of her window and looked out towards the town. She saw adults walking in and out of their houses, children running around chasing each other and laughing, and teenagers soaking up the last few rays of the summer sun. Luna sighed and turned away from the window.
She walked over to her dresser, and picked up an old family picture. It was of her mom, dad, and herself. Her mom was holding Luna in her arms and looked down at her lovingly. Her dad was behind her mom, his hands on her shoulders. And Luna was just looking as lost and confused and any 8 month year old could.
Looking at the picture brought tears to Luna’s eyes. This was the only picture of her family she had left. The rest of her belongings had burnt down in a fire…along with her parents. She was only 14 when that happened. Now Luna was 17, and the pain was still as fresh as it had been when she was told her parents were dead.
Luna set the picture down and tried to think about something else, but it was no use. Everything reminded her of what had happened to her. Her mind wasn’t even safe enough to escape to…
“Luna?†her step-mother said meekly as she opened up Luna’s bedroom door, “It’s time to eat, sweetie.â€
“I’m not hungry,†Luna said softly and turned away from her step mom.
“Oh, OK. I’ll leave a plate out for you in case you change your mind†Luna’s stepmom said as she closed the door.
Luna sat and listened to her step-mother’s footsteps fade away. Suddenly, Luna felt cold air surround her. “There back,†Luna thought. At that time, a book on her shelf fell over. She walked over and picked it up. She carefully set the book back on the shelf, making sure it wasn’t close enough to the edge to fall over. As she started to walk away, the book fell again. Luna, once again, picked up the books, but this time she set it on her bed. She turned on her lamp to see what kind of book had fallen. It was some books she, bought a few weeks ago. It was called “A Haunted House, Haunted Ground, Or Haunted You?â€
