Blurry trees and faded outlines of houses passed by his window. They had left the big city behind long ago and were now coming to a decent small town area. Snow was coming down in flurries and Michael drew a small sad face on the glass. His father was speaking to him, softly. “I’ll let you out up here.â€
His son looked to him, sleepy-eyed. The little boy didn’t understand what was happening. Only an hour before he had been sleeping in his bed with the covers pulled tight around his neck. Back there everything had been warm and comfy but here, in the backseat of his father’s car, the leather seats were cold and the windows let streams of light in, causing him to squint in pain. Michael wished more than anything that he could just go home.
“B-but Dad,†Michael shivered. His jacket could have been decorative for all the good it did. “Wha-what’s g-going on?â€
His father turned the wheel, softly. The car parked smoothly on the side of the road and, after turning off the engine, he watched his son from a mirror. “You are going to stay here for a little while. I’ll be back soon so I need you to stay on your best behavior.â€
Michael looked back out the window. It didn’t look too terrible. “B-but why?â€
“Because… I have a lot of things I need to take care of. You can take care of yourself, can’t you?â€
It was a stupid question but children tend to have the curious ability to take the most inane questions and answer them quite truthfully.
“No.â€
“I’m sure you can.â€
“I can’t, Dad,†It had suddenly dawned on him that his father might actually be serious. “Really I-I can’t.â€
His father still spoke softly to him. In all his seven years, Michael had never heard him once raise his voice or curse or do anything that his friend’s fathers did. Mr. Bay had always held his breath when he was angry and walked away from fights. In all his seven years, Michael had always been proud of his father but right then, his calm soft voice only scared him.
“Please. Please get out of the car.â€
Tears filled the little boy’s eyes as he obeyed his father. Snow patted him on the back but he felt no victory.
“Where am I supposed to go?â€
“There’s a tall brick building two doors down. You can’t miss it, Mike. It’ll be right there on the corner, waiting for you.†His father winked and his son frowned in response.
“C’mon, it’ll only be for a little while.â€
“You promise?â€
“Yeah…â€
His father hadn’t seemed so sure. “Really?â€
“Michael, I’m going to go now. You can do this, bud. Just be on your best behavior.â€
The little boy watched from the sidewalk as his father turned back onto the road. Years afterward Michael Bay would wish he had chucked a snowball at the windshield or had at least found a good sized rock to dent a door.
But all he can do is wonder and wish for his past-self did none of the sort. His past-self had even waved as his father drove back the way they’d come and then choked back his tears when he realized he was all alone on the side of the road…
