When her husband was murdered by his jealous brother, the mother-to-be lost her unborn child, sending her into heartache and bitter seclusion. Meanwhile, her best friend had just given birth to Sakura, but was put to death for breaking the shrine rules in having him. Having gone on a walk, Mariko stumbled upon the newborn Sakura left out in the cold to die. She took him home and cared for him as her own until he was old enough to be with his father, and 16 years later, they meet again...
