Sleepless
"The sun is setting and the moon is full. The birds are settling down in their nests for the night. The crickets are chirping and the snails are setting out for a long journey in the night. How beautiful they are within the night!" Ji-min pauses and turns to me, smiling softly as we sit on the roof of our house. He brushes aside his wood-brown hair and settles his hazel eyes on me. "So, is this what you like about the night? Is this what piques your interest?" I don't reply. I simply continue to stare at the stars as if I don't hear him. "There you go, getting lost in the stars again. I'll leave you to it, but just make sure you don't stay up too late, Shiva." Ji-min leans in and kisses my cheek.
For a moment, I'm brought back to reality. My red eyes flit over to meet his welcoming gaze, but soon after, he moves away, climbing down from the roof and disappearing inside. I rub my cheek. It's just me, now, and all the stars and frogs and bats and slugs and all the things the night brings.
A gentle breeze blows my black hair across my face. I stand up and look past the horizon, catching the last drop of an orange hue set below the dirt. I close my eyes and take a deep breath in before opening them again and climbing down from the roof.
"I want to go to sleep, I really do. But my curiosity knows no bounds. How could I tell Ji-min all the things I wonder? I'm sure he'll laugh at me or worse, call me cute." I shudder at the thought of it, but my face also grows a little warm.
I'm brought out of my thoughts once more as I see a pink string dancing along the dirt. I bend down and look closer. It's a worm crawling across the ground, following a glistening trail left by slugs.
"I've been alive for many years, but I still haven't solved the mystery... Well, tonight, I will," I say, a look of determination on my face as I pound my palm with my fist. With that, I begin to walk the trail of the slugs and worm almost as if I am one of them. -
I walk along the path until I reach a cozy cottage hidden among tall grass and various fuzzy plants that remind me of dandelions. Ethereal lights flicker through the air from fairies taking flight. They dance with the fireflies and wisps as I pass then by. One lands on my nose, and I give the lovely lady a gentle nod. She pats my nose before fluttering away, whispering a soft blessing as she departs.
As I approach the cottage, I see the figure I sought -- a powder blue lynx/fox-like entity adorned with black stripes and markings, puffed up with white fur on her chest and around her mouth. The small creature sits on her porch, watching the fries dance and play. I stop before her and her golden eyes land on me. After brushing aside her long rose gold hair, she finally speaks, Charkamorah, the succubus.
"What would a Darkling like yourself be doing visiting tiny little me? Do you really love me that much that you can't stay away, Shadow?" she teases in her diminutive, scratchy voice.
I hold a look that shows my lack of amusement. "No, I couldn't find enough time away from you, honeslty."
"Don't lie. You missed my voice," she further pushes, getting up and walking towards me.
"If I wanted to hear your voice, I would have listened to the crows. They sound almost like you."
Charky's ears lay back. "You came to my house just to insult me, huh?! Well then, I suppose I'll just have to curse you to teach you a lesson!"
I shake my head, not at all fazed. After all, insults and threats are the norm for our...complicated acquaintanceship. "I actually came here to discuss something with you. A word?"
Charkamorah's curiosity shows on her face as she raises a brow and leans up against the white picket fence lining her property. "Oh? I'm listening."
"I want to know. It's been bugging me."
"Hm?"
"Where do dreams come from, and how do I change them," I ask with a straight face, clenching my fists.
Her ears perk up at the utterance of these words, and like she's been jolted awake, her demeanor changes to become more alert. "Huh? You're joking, right?" the succubus asks, chortling, but my silence and the innocence in my concerned eyes says it all. She stops mid-laugh. "Oh, you're serious. This is a shock, coming from you. Wouldn't you say something like this is stupid? Why would you want to know?"
My ears lay flat like an irritated dog's. "Just...tell me...please. I need to know. I have to fix something."
"Oh, Shiva. Poor, poor Shiva." Charkamorah disappears and reappears on my shoulder, leaning over it casually, gazing up at me as I look down at her. "You think I know? I don't make dreams, I manipulate them."
"So, even the knowledge of dreams and their origins is beyond you?"
Charky nods. "It's not quite something you just stumble upon, either. But, you know what? Some things are best left unknown. It makes life more beautiful," she finishes in awe, gazing up at the purple sky full of stars.
I take a moment to soak in her words before shoving her off my shoulder and scoffing. "I asked if you knew where dreams came from, not to hear about your worthless philosophy. You were no help, so thanks a lot, Scrappy."
Charkamorah sits up and wipes herself off. "Well, whatever. I hope you walk through several spider webs tonight."
