so the plot is:
The Government has found a way to find your 'perfect match', aka your soulmate. they send a letter out to a person once they're 18, telling you where your soulmate is and what they look like. one Patricia Oades, our main character, turns 17, she gets her letter early, but it tells her 'Your soulmate does not exist in this universe. Patricia has a crush on this girl, Maddie, who is straight and has a boyfriend, and someone at her school finds out, exposing her. she runs into the woods, finding her neighbor, who got the same letter as Patricia, in a treehouse far in the trees. her neighbor gives her a drink and lets her vent, then sends her back home. Patricia goes to sleep, but when she wakes up, it's her 17th birthday again. everyone celebrates her getting her letter, and this is when she finds out she's in an alternate timeline, one where everyone gets their letters on their 17th birthday, and when Patricia opens her letter, she finds her soulmate is Maddie's twin sister, Katey. surprisingly, they fall in love over a couple weeks, but then Patricia sees her Neighbor again, this time with man, supposedly her soulmate, and her neighbor gives her the same drink as the one in the treehouse, telling her, "go home." she wakes again, the day after her 17th birthday, the day it all went wrong. with the chance to save her social status (even though it's not much) she prevents anyone from finding out about her feelings for Maddie, but it's not that hard now that they don't exist anymore. turns out, Katey didn't get her soulmate either in this timeline, so they have a chance to be together, after Patricia finds out that Katey has liked her for years.

Chapter 1:
The Government finally found a way to find our 'perfect match' aka soulmates. Everyone, when they turn 18, gets a letter telling them where their soulmate is and a picture of them so they know what they look like. my thoughts of my letter coming next year are interrupted when i hear a "Patricia! Dinner!" from my mom downstairs.
i slip my diary under my pillow and go out of my room, not bothering to close my door. my mom stands at the stove, dishing food onto plates for the three of us, including my brother. "Patricia, dear, there's a letter for you." she says, waving her spatula in the direction of the mail pile. i sift through them until i find the one addressed to me. surprisingly, there's a government seal on it. i open it, skimming over it. "it's my soulmate letter!" i exclaim, looking up and my mother, who has confusion written all over her face. "let me see that." she says, holding her hand out. she reads it, then looks at me with sorrow in her eyes. "oh my sweet girl..." she says. "why is this bad? i get my soulmate!" i say, reaching for the envelope to retrieve the picture of them from it.
i reach in and feel... nothing. looking inside, i see it's empty. "huh. they forgot the picture of them." i say, furrowing my brows and looking at my mom again. "did you read the last line?" she asks me. "no, why?" i respond, taking the letter back and looking at the last line. "This letter has been sent a year early as Patricia Oades' soulmate does not exist in this universe.. i gasp and drop the letter. "w-what?" i stutter, looking at the fallen letter. "well, isn't this what you wanted?" my mother says, trying to find light in a situation as dark as this. "who in their right mind would want to be such an outcast the government won't find them a soulmate, mom? who!?!" i start to raise my voice in panic. "maybe they didn't want to punish someone else by matching someone as ugly as you with them." my brother, Matthew, snickers from the other room.
"Matthew Oades, shut your trap before i do it for you and come eat your dinner!" mom raises her voice and Matthew takes it as a sign he should hurry to the table before mom goes all angry on him, as he should. -
(also this all takes place in Washington State)
we follow him to the table, where i pick at the lasagna i specifically asked for as my birthday dinner, and, after Matthew hurries and finishes, I ask to be excused. mom sees this as a "let her cope with this right now, talk later." sort of thing, so she lets me go. i hurry upstairs to my room and go to pull my diary out to write about what just happened, but it's not there. everywhere i search, it's not there. i sigh in exasperation and sit on my bed, curling into a fetal position, crying.
I wake up earlier than usual, so i hurried and put everything on so i can get a head start to school. i step out of my door into the cold Washington air, and my neighbor waves to me. "hello, Patricia!" she calls. "Hello, Ms.Hitcher." i say, walking over to her porch swing to sit beside her. "i got my letter last night." i confess to her, to which she looks at me in confusion. "18 already? i remember it as if it was just yesterday you were taking off for your first day of High School." she says, then laughs. "look at me, 25 years old and acting like i'm 60!" she jokes. -
"No, Ms.Hitcher. I'm afraid i'm only 17." i protest, and she turns to me with sadness on her face. "i know where this is going. you don't have a soulmate, do you?" she asks me. "no ma'am. the letter told me 'my soulmate does not exist in this timeline.'" i say, tears forming in the corner of my eyes. "Patricia, do you know why i am living alone at 25 years old?" she asks me, putting a hand on my shoulder. "because you didn't want to meet your soulmate?" i suggest, but she shakes her head. "no. i got my letter at 17 as well, for the same reason." i gasp as she says this.
-
"yep. i don't have a soulmate." Ms.Hitcher sighs, then a car pulls up in front of the house, with my best friend, Paige, in the front seat. "Hey Pat! get in, i'll drive us to school!" she yells, unlocking the passenger door. "talk to you later?" i look back to Ms.Hitcher, but the porch swing is empty. i look at it then look around in confusion, and Paige yells from the car again. "come on, Pat!" i hurry and get in the car.
-
"thanks. i would've been late if you hadn't showed up. when i'm with Ms. Hitcher, time flies." i say as she drives. "no problem. what are besties for, right?" she laughs along. "Hey Paige, have you met your soulmate yet?" i ask her. she's a year older than me, but got held back, so she had to retake her senior year, and got her soulmate. "oh yea! i saw him last night, he flew here from Indiana to meet me." Paige says. "he's so cute! he has the most perfect black hair and green eyes, and he's tall!" she gushes. "lucky. Hey, have you met anyone who got their soulmate letter a year early, just to find out they didn't have one?" i ask her. "hm. besides Ms. Hitcher? nope. almost everyone gets a soulmate." she says after a moment of thinking.

(anyone wanna help?)

Paige turns into the student parking lot, and we both get out to go to class. "thanks again for the ride." i say. i have a bad habit of apologizing and thanking people way more than i'm supposed to. "as i said, no problem." she says, heading to her locker. i head to mine, pulling my books out of it and going to class.

As I walk to class, the gears in my head began whirring. What if I am the one who received my letter early? After all,I did get my letter when I turned 17…and it did say that my soulmate didn’t exist!
During lunch, when I walk to my locker to get my lunch,my jaw drops in shock. My locker was already open and the school bully,James Thompson*,holds a piece of crinkled notebook paper. As soon as he sees me,he bursts out laughing.
“Look who’s here!Little miss crush-on-Maddie!” he chokes through his laughter.”Go on,admit it,I have it on writing!”
As I look closer,I see the piece of crinkled notebook paper is the love poem I wrote for Maddie a few weeks ago and stuffed in my locker. My cheeks flush in embarrassment and tears start trickling down my cheek. And worst of all,Maddie is here, looking at me strangely and says,”Pat?You like me?”
“What’s wrong, little crybaby?” James cackles wickedly.”Sad that your secret crush is exposed?”
His horrible posse joins in,laughing.
