Prologue
“We need to think about this more. I don’t think this is a good idea…” “Come on, Hornetnose. Remember the last time you regretted something? Limestar became a well-known leader.” Stars glittered upon the dimmed pelts of the two cats. “But, somethings not sitting right with me. I know I’m usually wrong to judge cats, but, something is just wrong with this. Can’t we pick another cat, Cloverberry?” Hornetnose complained again. “No. There is something very special about this cat.” “But, he’s just so young. Cats can change over time you know?” Hornetnose looked down at her paws and then up at Cloverberry again. “Please, Hornetnose. I’m sure things are going to happen, but it’s not like he’s invincible.” She mewed. Hornetnose paused and looked at the glittering lake that reflected the stars above the cats’ heads. “Fine. But if anything goes wrong, I never want to see you roaming my edge of the lake ever again.” Cloverberry nodded. “Okay. I promise… now we just need to find a way to talk to him.” She continued as if she weren’t just threatened. Hornetnose sighed. “Can’t we just wait? I’m sure whenever he’s older he’ll be able to go to the Moonstone.” Hornetnose mewed. “Yeah, but, I want things to be quicker.” “Cloverberry be patient. Just a few heartbeats ago you really wanted him to be the cat. He’s very required to you, and so for that, we shall wait.” She gently rested her tail on the light grey cat and purred. Cloverberry sat up quickly as she heard the ruffling of bushes. She jumped up and got in front of Hornetnose. “Who’s there? I demand you to show yourself!” “Easy, Cloverberry!” Hornetnose hissed and pushed her to the side. She stared at her for some short seconds and padded to the bushes. “We won’t hurt you. We were only just a tad bit startled.” She crouched down and sniffed the cat. Hornetnose slowly stood and saw a white paw coming toward her. The paw touched the fur that came out between her paws on the ground. She had noticed the cat’s fur had a bright red outline. So bright that she felt if she stared anymore longer at the fur she would become blind and depend on her old ears and nose even in Starclan. She heard slight snarls coming from the cat. Hornetnose crouched once again and gently lay her paw on the cat’s bright, white fur. “Are you okay?” “Hornetnose, get back over here!” Cloverberry hissed. Hornetnose’s tail flicked and her claws dug into the ground. “Ow! Watch where you set your claws!” The cat from the bushes yelped. “I’m so sorry! Oh, Starclan, I didn’t mean to!” Hornetnose mewed. She heard a young and fierce voice from the cat when they had hollered. The cat crawled out. She had wavy white fur with dark grey speckles on her pelt. Her eyes had a sharp, golden glow as she looked up. She looked as if she were just a warrior. -
Maybe just now eligible to become a leader. “Who… are you?” Hornetnose backed away. “Frostfern.” She waved her tail and walked closer to the Starclan cats. Before anyone could let out a single word, she hissed. “Who’s this cat you’re trying to prophesize?” “We’re not prophesizing anyone!” Cloverberry ran towards Frostfern. Her grey fur bristled as she stopped in front of her. “What do you think you’re doing? Prophecies aren’t any of you’re business…” Frostfern swiped an unsheathed claw at Cloverberry. Cloverberry dodged and pinned the white cat onto the ground. “Stop! Cloverberry quit it! We agreed to stop fighting a long time ago!” Hornetnose pushed the heavy set cat off of the other and gave her a stern look. “Our ancestors gave us the blessing of being able to be in Starclan to spend the rest of our spirited lives and instead of thanking them you choose to fight a different cat.” Hornetnose padded back to Frostfern. “I’m sorry, but you need to leave now. None of your knowledge should be involved with our prophecies. Frostfern paused for a moment, just staring at Hornetnose. “You’ll be sorry. For you will never forget me.” She abruptly got up and ran back to where she had come. “I never will. For you always will haunt my day and nightly dreams.” Hornetnose looked to the distance where Fernfern was running.

(Sorry I didn't check my spelling or anything-)
“Beetlekit! Slow down, will you?” Mistyeye put her paw on Beetlekit’s long tail.
“We’re going to the same place! You can just catch up with me when we get there Mistyeye!” “There is no specific place we’re going Beetlekit.
“What? But, there has to be a place where most prey is, right?”
“Well, not right now at least. Leaf bare is harsh on us. We can’t get any fish right now and we have to eat the land animals.” Mistyeye had a disgusted look on his face.
“I’ve never eaten the land animals.” Bettletail tugged at his tail.
“It’s not so great. I’ll just say that.” Mistyeye lifted his paw up and padded along and thought about his hunting skills on land. “I’m not really sure if I can even catch a vole. Fish are hard enough to catch already”
“I could! I could!” Beetletail bounced up and down and ran deeper into the forest.
“Beetlekit! Come back!” Mistyeye sprinted into the forest, trying to find his kit. “Beetlekit, please! I’m not kidding!..” Mistyeye heard a crash in the distance. His heart dropped as he slowly sat back down.
“Mistyeye?” Beetlekit’s voice sounded like it was muffled. Mistyeye looked back and stood up in awe.
“Where did you find that mouse?”
“I didn’t really find it. I caught it!” Mistyeye paused and lifted Beetlekit by his scruff. He began to run back to camp. Snow threw in the air from under his paws as he ran. He set Beetlekit down and hollered.
“Our first prey of leaf bare has been hunted! Hunted by a kit! My kit!” Cats wailed in happiness and surprise. Mistyeye crouched down. “Who are you going to share the mouse with?” He began to look around and find cats. Without saying anything else, he padded over to Moonwhisker, who was violently shivering in the elders den.
“Would you like to share this mouse with me?” Beetlekit set the plump mouse down in front of Moonwhisker.
“Oh, y-you just eat i-it by yourself. Don’t worry a-about me.” Even his purr chattered as he spoke. Beetlekit pushed it against his pelt and stared back up at him.
“I could get you some dry moss too, you know, to warm you up.”
“N-No, no. I’m okay.” Beetlekit stared at him longer and padded away. He went into the medicine cat den and sniffed around until he scented moss. He smelled the strong scent but he didn’t see it. It must be the catmint. He huffed and sniffed again. No, It’s moss!
“But where?” He mewed under his breath. He continued to sniff where the moss was. Beetlekit tripped over a stone in the dirt ground. He whimpered as he looked up, he blinked the blur out of his eyes as had moved the rock a bit when he tripped over it. He got up and saw pale green sticking out of the hole under the stone. He dug the hole up a bit more and gently bit the moss to pick up. Beetlekit drug the moss around camp and returned back to the elder.
“I do have to worry about you, Moonwhisker.” Beetlekit purred and set up Moonwhisker’s new bed. After he had finished the elder crawled into it and wrapped his tail around his nose. “Why. . . this is the nicest bed I’ve ever lay in!”
“Really? I mean, I guess I just got lucky while making it.”
“Maybe.” He yawned and fell asleep abruptly. Beetlekit purred wherever he saw that Moonwhisker had eaten half of the mouse. Beetlekit finished the rest of the share and padded to the nursery. Pinekit tackled him as soon as he had entered.
“Get off! Get off!” Beetlekit whined as he squirmed out of his brother’s grip. Pinekit got back down to crouch again and swung his tail.
“Or what?” He teased,
“What? What is if you attack me again I’ll end up throwing up on you! I just ate half a mouse that was the same size as me!”
“Ew! You know what? You’re no fun! You never play!”
“Because you unsheathe your claws whenever we fight! It really hurts.” Beetlekit bent his head down and began to groom his white tail tip. Pinekit sighed and lay next to him and looked at their sister.
“What are you doing, Badgerkit?” Badgerkit was staring in the corner of the nursery with her tail still.
“Are you okay?” Beetlekit stared at her and looked at Pinekit who looked concerned.
“Shhhh!” Badgerkit’s fur bristled. Beetlekit crouched and headed towards her.
“Spider!” Beetlekit screeched and fell over.
“Careful!” She hissed and bent her head down, letting the spider crawl on her nose. She sat up and crossed her eyes. “I’m going to name you Fuzzyfang.” Badgerkit turned around and showed her brothers. “You’re my best friend now.” She whispered. Badgerkit purred as Fuzzyfang crawled on her head. She looked at her terrified brothers.
“Yuck!” Pinekit snorted. Beetlekit was on the floor in an attack stance. His pelt was no longer silky, instead, it was up with fear, his pupils were sharp and small.
“Where’s Foresttail?” Badgerkit asked Pinekit.
“I think she’s at the fresh-kill pile. Ever since we’ve been a moon away from being apprentices she’s been going out on a lot of breaks from us.” Pinekit rolled his eyes and saw Beetlekit was still in a crouch he mewed and attacked him.
“Get off!” Beetlekit hissed and tried to kick him off. Badgerkit sighed and padded out of the den with the spider still on her head. Pinekit laughed and kept making fun of Beetlekit after he got off of him. Beetlekit has always been afraid of bugs but of course, his sister loves them and his name is Beetlekit. I have a stupid name anyway. He looked at a small hole through the bramble. Maybe my third name will be better. He crawled out of the den and leaped from the mud below him.
“Where are you going?” Pinekit whined and went through the same exit. He didn’t jump far enough so he got mud all over his hind paws. He sighed and got to Beetlekit’s side.
“I’m going to see if I can go to the river with Mistyeye.” He answered his brother’s question.
“I want to go!” Pinekit squeaked.
“Well, we can just both ask him.” Beetlekit nodded and headed to the front of the den.
“Do you see him?” Pinekit asked. Beetlekit shook his head as he looked around the clearing. “Let’s check the dens.” He mewed and took lead. They headed towards the medicine cat den where Appledusk was treating an elder’s numb paw.
“You just have to try and keep your paws warm, Sunflame.” She sighed.
“Have you seen Mistyeye?” Pinekit padded towards Appledusk.
“No, sorry.” She mewed then saw the mud on his paws. “Pinekit! You need to get yourself cleaned up, you’re tracking mud in the den!”
“S-Sorry!” Appledusk gently pushed out and stared at Beetlekit. He sighed and padded away slowly but then looked over his shoulder.
“Do you need any help. . .”
“I’m fine, Beetlekit.” She continued resting Sunflame’s paws on dry moss.
“Okay.” He sighed and continued out of the den with his brother.
“Why are you obsessed with medicine cats?” Pinekit gasped. “Do you want to be a. . . medicine cat?”
“No! Of course not, I just. . . like helping cats. That’s all!” Beetlekit squeaked. Mistyeye saw his kits from the distance, arguing.
“What is it this time?” He sighed.
“Beetlekit wants to be a medicine cat!” Pinekit gagged. Appledusk turned around from the elder and to Beetlekit.
“You do?” She purred. Mistyeye turned his head.
“Really?”
“I-I. . . u-um, yes-! N-no?” The three cats stared at him.
“But, you’re really good at hunting?” Mistyeye sounded confused.
“I mean, you are really good at sorting herbs.” Appledusk purred. Beetlekit looked at Appledusk then Mistyeyes and back at the medicine cat again. Foresttail came over.
“What’s going on?” She mewed and saw Beetlekit freaking out. “Don’t tell me you started talking about decisions again!” She hissed at Mistyeye and pushed Beetlekit away, back to the nursery. “You don’t have to make a decision until your ceremony day. Don’t let anyone choose for you. It’s your decision and I’ll support your decisions. Even if you decide to just go ahead and be an elder I’ll be happy.” She licked the top of his head. Beetlekit purred.
“Foresttail, can I tell you some -
“Foresttail, can I tell you something?”
“Of course, my sweet.”
“I want to be a medicine cat.” He whispered.
“I could totally see you doing that! It’d be cool to have my own kit treating my own wounds.” She purred and cuddled Beetlekit close.
“I don’t want to go to the apprentices’ den.” He looked tired.
“Maybe not now but, I’m sure once you become an apprentice you’ll be ready to get away from me,” She yawned and wrapped her tail around Beetlekit. “on your own time.” She continued then, lay her head on her paws. Beetlekit purred louder and pushed his head on her warm pelt. Beetlekit drowned into the darkness of his dreams then, he found himself in a sparkling place where stars scattered wherever they desired.
“Where am I?” Beetleit’s eyes widened. Am I. . ?
“Hello, young’un” A heavy set, light grey she-cat padded out of the glowing bushes. “My name is Cloverberry.”
“Am I dead?” Beetlekit whimpered. “I didn’t get to say goodbye to. . .”
“No, no. You’re only dreaming.” She stuck her paw up, getting closer to him. “Look, I’m not allowed to be doing this right now but I need to tell you something. Could you keep a secret?” Cloverberry crouched.
“O-Oh! Yes, I can.”
“Good.” She sighed. “Terrible things are going to happen to the ones beloved to you. Cats of your kind are going to slowly burn your clan down. Unite all close ones together or all may be lost.”
“W-What?” Beetlekit’s fur bristled. The cat began to fade away. “Wait! No!” Beetlekit unsheathed his claws and held his paw out, stretching his arm, trying to get Cloverberry back. Beetlekit raised his head abruptly. He realized his mother was no longer by his side. You’ve got to keep a secret. You have to keep a secret. He closed his eyes tight and stood up, as he opened them. He sat in the nursery for a few moments. Just staring at his paws. I’m only a kit. He sighed. Beetlekit slowly padded out. He realized Pinekit’s teeth were chattering and there was frost on his whiskers and pelt.
“Pinekit?” He cocked his head to the side. “What happened?”
“I-I went to the river!” He mewed. “W-Well, not the river. I-It’s more like an ice block.”
“Without me..?”
“Yeah! Mistyeye and I played on the ice!”
“Oh. . . okay. That’s cool Pinekit.” Beetlekit snorted and padded away from him.
“It was my idea!” He hissed to himself. Pinekit padded to Badgerkit and began playing with Fuzzyfang. “Gross.” Beetlekit’s eyes clouded. He ran to Appledusk’s den.
“Ah!” Appledusk flinched then settled down with her breath uneven. “Beetlekit what in the name of Starclan?” She paused and noticed his sad look. “What’s wrong?’
“Pinekit and Mistyeye went to the river without me and it was my idea!” He whined.
“Oh, you know it’s okay! Whenever you’re older you can go to the river whenever you want. It’s not like that was your only opportunity.”
“It was my only opportunity as a kit!” Appledusk sighed and padded away and waved her tail to tell him to follow. Beetlekit sniffled and followed her.
“Where are we going?”
“The river of course!” Appledusk purred. Beetlekit gasped loudly. “Shhh! We don’t want Pinekit coming along, do we?” She whispered. Beetlekit shook his head and purred.
“Also. . . Appledusk can I tell you something?”
“You can tell me anything, Beetlekit.” Appledusk nodded. Beetlekit quickly padded to her side. “Well, I was thinking about my ceremony, and I would like to be a medicine cat.”
“Would you like to tell Mudtstar that?” She mewed.
“Not until I see the river!” Beetlekit jumped.
“Okay, okay.” Appledusk playfully rolled her eyes.
