Thread Topic: Questioning yall about your characters
-
You can answer any of these when you feel like it. Or just sit and think about the questions lol. They're all more about how you create your characters than anything else
---
1) When you create a character, do you often find yourself being inspired by similar things to previous characters? Like for example, maybe classical music always makes you inspired to create your characters, or pirates.
2) How do you define strength in your characters? Is there a typical pattern in how your characters are, that resembles a theme in how you subconsciously define strength? For example, personality, background, physical strength or powers.
3) Do you see a resemblance to the different parts of yourself in your characters?
4) Do you still remember your first OC? Do you still work on them or use them? Or have they been placed into the box of forgotten ocs?
5) Who is your most complex character? And why?
6) Are you guilty of giving all or the majority of your characters a mental illness or traumatic event that happened to them?
7) What is the most common kind of character you create? And what is the least common?
8) What character types do you struggle with the most?
9) Are your characters conventionally attractive?
10) Do your characters grow with you? Do they age over time and adapt or do they always stay the same age?
11) What differences do you notice in your first OC and most recent OC? What areas have you improved on in character creating or changed in the way you do things?
12) What character type have you never tried to create before?
13) Who is your favourite character and why?
14) Does your favourite character closely resemble you in terms of personality, life or the way they think and feel?
15) Who, to you, is your most attractive character?
16) what aspect of one of your characters, are you currently struggling with to either write or build on?
17) are your characters all typically similar ages to one another? Or do they vary?
18) Have you ever had a character which is really just a re-skin of another fictional character in media that you like? (It's okay to say you do have one lol)
19) what do you typically define as "weaknesses" in your characters? Is it particular personality traits? An inability to use a weapon? A past event that is holding them back?
20) Do you have a habit of creating similar characters? Is there little difference between your chatacters? do you find them falling into particular categories and themes as each other? Or are they all greatly unique?
21) Does the negative experiences your character went through, make them weaker, or stronger?
22) Have you ever been guilty of adding a mental illness, disability, violent streak or traumatic backstory to your character for the sake of only making them special or unique? Edgy, cool, tragic- stuff like that. (Its okay to say you have)
23) Does inspiration to creating a character come naturally to you? Or do you have to really sit down and think about it?
24) what is, your worst designed character? Not in appearances, but just overall, they're kind of embarrassing and just... not it.
25) Is there much diversity in your characters?
26) Do your characters lives and stories invoke strong feelings inside of you? Are you able to feel the sadness or joy they experience when looking back on events they went through?
27) Do you prefer writing bad guys, good guys or the morally ambiguous?
28) Do your characters often fall in love and form relationships and find people they're able to connect with? Or are they typically not interested and busy with their own goals?
29) What do you do with a character, once their story is complete?
30) Do you find it difficult to allow your characters to have flaws? -
1) Not that I remember. Usually when I see the plot I have an idea of how they should be in terms of personality, I don't really use anything to gain inspiration.
2) Strengths in my opinion are pretty much anything that can give you an advantage in a situation, doesn't matter which. So I'll say speed is a strength a character has, and also good spatial skills, or whatever.
3) Oh yes. Sometimes I'll even make a character and I'll be like, 'Let's make them like this' and as the story goes on, I never realized that was a part of who I was. Or if one's talking appearance-wise, I did that a lot in the past because all hail redheads lol
4) My very first OC was when we were writing a story in 1st grade. She was a peacock called SeraphinaTotally didn't think of the name from Barbie. I honestly haven't thought about her in years.
5) I dOn'T kNoW. I don't consider things complex when I know the story behind it because then it's all cause and effect.
6) I don't think I've given any of my characters a mental illness, unless you count insanity as one. And I don't give them necessarily traumatic pasts, but they're usually not the happiest? Like maybe on of their parents died or they had a bad relationship with someone.
7) Independent. I cannot do followers, sorry. We even had a challenge in the Stage to make a character that you'd never make normally, the opposite of what you usually do, and I, to say the least, failed.
Ok it's taken me half an hour to get through seven questions lol
8) Timid and dependent. I've been getting better at it, though.
9) ...Yes...
10) They don't grow with me they grow with their story.
11) Ok I'm going to go with first successful OC because I don't remember what my peacock in 1st grade was like.
Gaynor was my first successful one. She was fierce and was seeking revenge for the destruction of her town, very emotionally driven.
The most recent one I've made is Jordan, and she's literally emotionless. I've also done zero development on her, all I've done is the character sheet and the very first post of the rp
12) Umm I don't actually know.
13) WhY aRe YoU aSkInG tHiS dO yOu ReAlLy ExPeCt mE tO bE aBlE tO cHoOsE????
14) I wouldn't know, I don't have a favorite character
15) Uhh...Callyn maybe?
16) I know not
17) they're usually similar ages, mid teens to early twenties. There's a few that are older
18) Not that I remember.
19) Just take what I put for strengths.
20) They're a mixture, really.
21) Always depends on the character.
22) No, it's not for the character's sake lol. It just adds pizzazz to the story
23) Yes and no. Getting the energy to make a character is usually hard. But I usually just figure out a name I like, put the age and gender, and then for the rest of the sheet fill in the parts I know, the rest are TBD
24) I don't remember I just woke up
25) I don't remember
26) Very much so. I'm sometimes almost brought to tears thinking about those things.
27) Anything and everything
28) Usually the former.
29) Their story is never complete.
30) Not really. Creating the flaws is more difficult than allowing them to have them. -
1) Sometimes ig
2) for me, it really depends on what I’m trying to aim for while caring my character. Sometimes I’ll have a physically strong and sometimes I’ll have a mentally strong one, or another.
3) lol usually. I tend to do it subconsciously
4) I gotta be honest with you, my first OC is years old and I have no idea what it is lolol
5) Hmmmm maybe Maeve Brooklyn. I used her for my book You Should See Me In A Crown, and I think she’s my most complex bc she was normal until the only person that loved her was killed. Since she was so fragile, she snapped and turned psychotic and there’s a lot more. Yeah.
6) Hmm. I never thought about it that way, but maybe
7) A simple human being. The least common would probably be a creature like an elf or dwarf.
8) Tsundere
9) .....yeah.....
10) depends. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t
11) My older OCs were extreme. Ex. Mary Sues/Gary Stus or people with too many and/or unnecessary flaws
12) Hmmmm. Idk, actually
13) OH GOD I DON’T KNOW UMMMMMM
Maybe... Melody Stark or Arabella Pagan? Idk
14) In ways. Mostly personality
15) Hmmmmm
Imma say either Cade Ridges or Renee Jackson
16) not sure
17) They all typically range from ages 14 to 23
18) I actually don’t think so
19) usually it’s personality flaws or events in their past that hold them back, it even emotions that they’re struggling to deal with and understand
20) I usually tend to make them more similar then I first realize
21) They start or weaker because of them, but they gain strength after time
22) Yup, I’ve felt guilty ;w;
23) It comes fairly naturally
24) definitely Isaac King, but that’s just because he’sa manipulating perverted b*tch
25) sometimes yes, sometimes no
26) yes, 100 and 10%
27) Morally ambiguous
28) well I’m a romance dork, so basically everything I write has romance. So yes.
29) Sometimes I lie down and imagine their later futures, or alternate versions of their futures. Or sometimes I even re-use them
30) not really -
1) Eh, kind of. I really base them off of parts of me, or what I wish I could be like or how I want to look to others.
2) My characters tend to have similar strengths, considering the fact they're all very kind characters and tend to be very welcoming for the most part. They also happen to be good at something involving the arts, not sure if that counts.
3) Do you see a resemblance to the different parts of yourself in your characters?
4) My first OC. Gosh, it's been a while since I've made her. What, in like 5th or 6th grade? Wow, like 3-4 years ago. That long ago.
5) I feel like my most complex character at the moment is probably Jo. She's grown up in a very large family with tons of siblings, always feeling as though she has to look up to her eldest ones. Her parents work for a fashion magazine where they put their kids in, and they tend to criticize her with passive-aggressive comments about her looks, weight, clothing style, etc., and much more than her other siblings. She's tried so hard to get up to her parents standards, she even becomes a internet influencer, streamer and blogger. Even through all that, she's never been able to appease her parents. That leads to a lot of self doubt, self-criticism, and to her developing anxiety issues, anorexia, and a sense of always having to please and people.
6) Honestly yes, but at times, kind of no. In my opinion, I think it's interesting to see how someone in these situations would deal with it, considering I've never been in a situation like this myself.
7) The most common kind of character is a kind, energetic, stubborn teenage girl. I really tend to make characters of how I wish I was. A better version of me. I tend to do less male, calm, logical characters, mainly because that's not my strong suit and it's hard for me to do those types of characters.
8) Mostly male characters, considering I'm not one lol. Also more logical, calm, problem solvers.
9) Yeah, to be honest. I make them like that because I have ~self-consciousness~ and ~low self esteem issues~ so I tend to make them as how I'd really like to look but am far too anxious and self conscious to make myself look like.
10) I feel like they stay relatively the same physically. Mentally? I believe they do grow over time.
11) There definitely many differences between my first OC and my most recent ones. I tend to add more things that are more like me and make them more relatable. I don't really know how to word it.
12) Probably a more logical, problem-solving character. I'm not that type of person myself, so I don't really know how they'd act/react to things.
13) I honestly can't pick just one, but right now, probably my newest char, Vivian. She's got a mom friend vibe and is a relatively extroverted person. Honestly really reminds me of my best friend. Heh, could be one reason why I made her.
14) Honestly, I feel like all my chars do, but yes, I think my char definitely does resemble me in many different ways.
15) I'd have to say my girl Jo, but all the ladies (and gentlemen) are very beautiful/handsome. <3
16) I feel like, maybe trying to contribute parts of their personality or other little quirks I don't have. Like, stubbornness. I don't think I'm a very stubborn person, so it's hard to add it into RPing.
17) They're all pretty similar in age, usually around 15-18 years old. My oldest is probably Jo or Ashton, around 18 and 19 years of age.
18) Honestly, yeah lol. It's more of appearance rather than personalities. I just am not very creative u^u.
19) Probably more of personality traits and past events holding the characters back. For Olive, as an example, she's always considered her dyslexia as a flaw. The fact she can't spell or read properly always tends to get to her, making her feel more self-conscious about it.
20) Yeah, most of my characters tend to be similar. They all have interests in something in the arts, like singing, dancing, drawing, playing instruments, etc. They also all tend to be very kind, welcoming, stubborn and ADD/ADHD ridden people. Which is pretty similar to myself lol.
21) Does the negative experiences your character went through, make them weaker, or stronger? I like to feel that it makes them become stronger. They learn to grow with their flaws and to accept them.
22) Yes, I do. I would hate for anyone who has to go through what my chars have in the backstory and I feel awful for people who do go through those things.
23) Sometimes it just comes out of nowhere, sometimes I have to think about it. Really depends on whether I have some part of it thought out already.
24) I feel like, maybe Felix? He's one of my newer chars and I honestly kind of made him in a rush. I'd like to redo him some, maybe fix his personality traits.
25) I feel like there's diversity, but I'm sure I could get more diverse with personalities, appearances, likes and dislikes, etc.
26) Honestly, definitely. It definitely lets me experience things I wish that I could when I RP as them.
27) I like doing all, really. I don't have many guy characters though, so I couldn't really tell you lmao.
28) Most of my characters do tend to fall in love easily, but I feel like a few of them do prefer to occupy themselves with their own goals.
29) I honestly don't know, mainly because none of their stories are complete yet.
30) Not really. It makes it much easier and honestly more fun and interesting to RP as the characters when they have flaws. In my opinion, it'd be boring having a perfect character. -
1) Yes, definitely! I'm typically inspired by different fandoms but music and previous art often affects my character creating.
2) For me, strength is never giving up. Getting back up when you're knocked down, refusing to just accept things as they are if there's a chance to fix them.
3) Honestly? Yes. A lot of my characters are humorous, friendly, and lively, attributes of mine that people comment to me on.
4) I don't remember my first OC, but the one I remember most was a Warrior Cats OC named Marblemoon. She's just about the earliest OC and I actually wanted to draw her recently.
5) Probably Iris. Her character hasn't really been developed yet, but she really stood out to me when thinking about this question. She went from being an annoying sister to someone with emotion depth and grief. Her character development really shot through the roof compared to my other characters.
6) I try not to do that often, but yes, I usually tend to traumatize my characters to give them an interesting backstory or more development. Or just for giving them a good reason to be a pain in the butt.
7) Fun, goofy, good-hearted and loyal guys. It's pretty much the one thing I can do when I make dudes. Least common? Good female villains.
8) Possibly the cunning and conniving characters. The ones who always want to remain aloof. Or the smart ones because my brain starts to explode.
9) Yes. Usually all of them are attractive and that's dumb, so I'm working on it.
10) No, not really. They grow at their own time and pace.
11) Marblemoon was, essentially, a flat character that would die for her friends but just wouldn't die. Julia is a disabled florist with glasses and a defensive attitude when it comes to her hometown and sauced the love interest. I'd say I've developed.
12) Maybe a child? Like an evil little baby or something.
13) Nathan is probably one of my top favorite characters. He's a childish little demon who's lovable and innocent. Well mostly innocent.
14) Yes and no. It's kind of complicated because some have my attributes and some don't, some react ways I might and most do not.
15) *stares at Tat suspiciously* I'd say Chandler's pretty attractive. He's a mysterious and tall guy which I find mildly alluring.
16) It's getting hard for me to turn Marblemoon into a more complex character. I'll probably have to rewrite her entirely.
17) Most are minors are young adults with the exception of James, who was already an adult.
18) YEP. Crypta was actually heavily inspired by Entrapta from She-Ra.
19) Weaknesses? They usually tend to be other people or physical things. It's rarely a mental boundary that they have to overcome.
20) Most of the dudes are basically the same.
21) Weaker usually, but it also inspires them to do better.
22) Yes, I'll admit. Rosa is a boring character of mine who's just pretty sassy but was born without a leg.
23) Depends.
24) Ander. It's Ander.
25) Usually among the girls, then yes! Tons of variety.
26) YES. YES. YES. I'm already an empathetic person, but it hits hard when a character dies.
27) I usually lean to making the "good guys", but I love making the morally ambiguous. They're much more interesting.
28) Basically all of my characters find love, whether it's platonic, romantic, or other kinds.
29) Usually just let them be. I've reused only two characters (unless it's a revamp) and one was in the same series and the other was a general OC
30) Yep. If they're annoying, I don't like them. But if they have no flaws, they are B O R I N G -
Wait why is Ander your most embarrassing character? XD
This is why we gotta redo that rp -
