Chapter One: Glyndwr
Kylan grinned as he crept over to his friend, Melina, sitting next to the campfire. He stuck out his hand and gave her shoulder a quick poke before turning around and chatting to his twin brother, Kyler, innocently. Kyler was in on the trick, and loved seeing Melina worked up, like how she did when someone poked her.
Melina whipped around and glared at their camp mates. “Okay, who did it?” She frowned disapprovingly at Kymara, Kylan and Kylar’s older sister, and Flare, who had looked up from their s’mores and tilted their heads confusedly.
Kymara had invited them all to camp in the woods next to her house after her parents had gone out for a night. Their friend Faith was unable to come, though, and so she’d stayed home. Melina and Cam had come together, Akira came alone, and both Lennox and Katana had come grudgingly. Flare was always with Kymara anyways, so she was there before anyone had gotten there.
“So? Who was it?” Melina asked for the second time. “Kymara. Why did you do that?”
“Do what?” Kymara asked exasperatedly. “What did I do now?”
“Wait, Kymara…” Flare began, then trailed off. “Ugh.”
Kylan smiled to himself as Melina’s attention turned to Kymara.
“You poked me!” Melina told Kymara. “I’ve already asked you really nicely to stop. So why’d you do it?”
“Hold on,” Kymara said, crossing her arms. “You think I poked you? Jeez, Millie, I knew you were thick, but not stupid.”
Melina frowned. “Please don’t call me ‘Millie’. I prefer Melina, or rarely Lina. And I’m not thick. Or stupid.” Melina sighed. “But...I believe you. If you’re anything, Kymara, you’re not a liar.”
Kymara huffed. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
Lennox stepped forward. “It was Katana, Melina. I saw her.” She grinned mischievously, her red eyes sparkling.
“Are you sure, X?” Melina asked hesitantly. “You love to play tricks. What if it was you?”
Kylan bit his lip. His joke had gone a lot farther than he’d wanted it to. He shot a glance at Kyler, raising an eyebrow. Now that Lennox was involved, this could get ugly.
Lennox stuck her tongue out at Melina. “Find out, then!”
Katana, sitting on a tarp alone near the edge of the firelight, growled. “Lie about me again, Lennox. I dare you.” She slowly pulled out her sword from its sheath threateningly.
Lennox snarled, her sharp teeth showing. “Fine. It was Kylan.” Then she disappeared in a cloud of shadow.
Melina sighed, then glanced at Katana. “Was it him?”
“Yes. Ugh. This is so stupid. Why do you even care so much? Now Lennox is going to go rage, Kymara is sulking, and Kylan won’t confess. Just drop it.”
Flare, watching Katana get angrier and angrier, knew what was coming and nudged Kymara, who was also watching. “Maybe we should go.”
“Probably,” Kymara said, “but I want to watch this. It’s fun when Katana gets angry.”
“What?” Flare exclaimed. “Are you crazy? She’ll kill us all!”
“No, she won’t. Lennox will, but she won’t. She can control her anger, and when she is going to kill someone, she does it quickly, and never personally.” Kymara paused, considering something. “But Melina should watch her back tonight. She might...accidentally...wake up with a tarantula in her shirt.”
Flare cringed. “Yeah, you’re right.” She glanced at Kylan, who was watching the argument with wide eyes. “Kylan, too. And maybe Kyler.” She snickered. -
Kylan stepped forward, Kyler pulling on his hand for him to stop. “Um, guys,” he began, his fluffy brown hair waving in the faint breeze. “If it helps, I did poke Lina…” Kyler groaned and slapped his face with his hand.
“Kylan.” Katana hissed. “If you’re smart, you’ll shut up.”
Kylan grimaced and stepped back, Kyler holding back snorts of laughter.
“Yeah, come on, Kay. Read the room,” Melina added. She turned to Katana. “But you didn’t have to threaten him, Katana.”
Katana took a deep breath, then screamed. “YES I DID!” She paused. “You know,” she said, tapping her fingers on her sword’s handle, “maybe I should take a lesson or two from X.” Katana jumped up from her spot, drew her sword, and ran past the campfire and into the woods, slashing the canvas of a tent as she passed.
Kylan and Kyler sighed at the same time. “I just bought that tent,” Kyler whispered.
“Maybe next time, don’t wait so long to tell Melina you poked her!” Kymara giggled and gave Kylan a friendly punch to the shoulder.
Kylan grunted, rubbing his shoulder. “Noted.”
“So, um,” Kyler began. “Is anyone going to catch her?”
“Not it!” immediately called Kymara. She nudged Flare with her elbow.
“I-” Flare broke off. “Fine. I’ll go. But someone has to go with me!”
Melina sniffed, holding her nose up in the air. “Not me.” She glanced around the fire they were all sitting cross legged around. “Make one of the twins go,” she said, gesturing to the nearly identical boys with fluffy brown hair and green eyes.
“What?” Kylan exclaimed. “No way! Kat’ll kill me, and so will Lennox, if she’s still out there.” He pointed at Akira, who was sitting looking bored with Cam. The white haired girl with purple eyes looked up in alarm. “Make her go!”
“No!” she said, the firelight shining off of her light purple skin. “I’m definitely not going after Katana, especially with X still out there. Have Cam go.” Akira tilted her head to the boy sitting next to her with dark skin and dark brown short hair.
Cam sighed. “Has it occurred to any of you that Kyler is the one that suggested someone go after her? He should go.”
Everyone turned to Kyler. The camping site was filled with unease.
“Okay…” Melina started. “Make Ky go, then!”
Kyler wrinkled his nose. “Don’t call me ‘Ky’. It sounds stupid. Just Kyler is completely fine.” He sighed heavily. “Alright. Fine.”
Flare dipped her head nervously. “Okay, then. Me and Kyler.”
Akira swallowed and nodded towards the two. Flare stood up and walked over to where Kylan and Kyler were standing, her long fiery red hair waving as she walked.
Kylan stared at his twin. “Kyler, be careful, okay? I’m serious. Lennox can be dangerous, and so can Katana.”
Kyler laughed. “Don’t worry, little brother. I’ll be fine.” His green eyes sparkled with determination.
Flare took a deep breath and nodded towards Kymara, then gestured to Kyler to leave. Both Flare and Kyler walked away from the campfire and into the shadowy forest.
Kymara let out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding. “Now what?” she asked nobody in particular.
Akira shrugged. “Go into the tent? I don’t know. It feels wrong to let Flare and Kyler go alone.”
Melina nodded. “I feel the same way. Something could happen to them.”
Cam sighed. “I’m going inside,” he said. “Anyone who wants to come, can.” Then he stood up from his spot beside Akira and walked into the tent.
Kylan tapped his fingers nervously on the side of his leg. “I’m worried,” he confessed. “Kyler can’t-” A scream from the tent interrupted whatever he was going to say. “Cam!” -
Akira and Melina leaped up and ran into the tent, with Kymara and Kylan hot on their heels.
When they got inside, they saw Cam standing frozen in the middle of the tent, staring at a strange human figure with large wings and blood red scales covering its body. It had glowing red eyes and sharp claws, and its tail was whipping around behind it.
“Glyndwr!” exclaimed Melina. “Why are you here?”
The human-dragon snorted, a puff of smoke out of its nostrils. “I’ve been invited too, didn’t you know?” Its eyes glimmered maliciously.
Kymara tilted her head. “I didn’t invite you,” she said. “So who-!”
Suddenly, Lennox appeared next to Kylan in a cloud of shadow. “I did,” she said, a grin stretched across her face.
Kyler and Flare broke into the tent, panting. “Glyndwr,” Kyler stammered. “They’re-” He broke off, seeing Lennox standing next to Glyndwr. “Oh, no…” He glanced at Flare. “We’re too late.”
Flare’s bright yellow eyes brimmed with fear. “Lennox, please don’t do it.”
Kylan gulped. “Don’t do what?”
A terrifying smile grew on Lennox’s face. “This.” Dark swirls of shadowy mist began to curl around Lennox’s fingertips. The red haired girl closed her eyes and squeezed her hands into a fist, moving her lips silently.
“Flare,” Kymara hissed. “Let’s go!” Flare nodded rapidly and began to back away towards the tent’s flap. Kymara was in front of her, walking backwards as well, occasionally stealing glances at Glyndwr and Lennox. Suddenly hundreds of bolts of razor sharp bolts of darkness shot out from Lennox, one hitting Kymara in the chest and throwing her against the side of the tent.
“Kymara!” Flare screamed. “No-!” Her words were cut off as a dark bolt plunged into the side of her torso, knocking her to the ground, yelling in pain.
One of the bolts hit Kylan in the stomach, leg, and another in his arm as he tried to run. He collapsed in his tracks, his good arm hugging his injured arm.
None of the bolts had hit Melina, and she cried out in distress as she stared at the horrific scene in front of her.
Kyler curled into a ball, cradling himself around the largest bolt by far sticking out of his stomach.
Glyndwr grinned with sharp dragon teeth gleefully as everyone screamed in pain or horror. They held up their hands and examined their claws in an almost bored-like manner.
Akira grimaced and pulled one of the bolts out of her arm and sent it spinning back towards Lennox.
Lennox caught the bolt in midair, but not before it gave her the smallest cut possible on her thumb. “Huh,” she remarked. “Ouch.” She leaped into the air and spotted Cam, who hadn’t gotten hit, trying to crawl out of the tent without being seen. She narrowed her eyes, and as quick as a blink she appeared next to Cam in a cloud of shadow.
Cam looked up at Lennox with a mixture of surprise, shock, and horror before Lennox reached out and picked Cam up by the neck. Cam screeched in pain and began kicking wildly, trying to escape Lennox’s death grip.
“Cam!” Akira screamed. “Noo!” The white-haired girl leapt up and dived for Cam, but Glyndwr pounced onto her, knocking her to the ground and pinning her there helplessly.
Lennox grinned as she saw Akira trying to save her friend and plunged the dark bolt straight into Cam’s neck. She dropped him and he crumpled to the ground, already dead.
Flare groaned and sat up, clutching her side. “Cam...no…”
Lennox laughed, a cold sound piercing through the sorrow and helplessness. “I’ve never liked any of you,” she declared. “Especially Kylan. In fact, I only came here so Glyndwr could feed.” She pointed to Cam. “All yours.”
The dragon licked its lips hungrily and advanced to the body, and began to eat hungrily and loudly. -
Flare covered her mouth and held back a gag of disgust. This horrible dragon was eating her formerly alive friend.
Kylan laid in a rapidly spreading pool of blood coming from his arm, leg, and stomach. “M-Melina,” he choked out.
Melina crawled over to Kylan, staining her hands and knees red. “I’m here, don’t worry.” She began to sob.
“I don’t have much time,” he whispered. “Please tell Kyler that I loved spending my days with him, and would repeat it in a heartbeat.” He coughed weakly, and held out his hand to her.
Melina grabbed Kylan’s hand and gripped it tightly. “Kylan, you can tell him yourself!” She took a deep breath and began to channel healing energy, determined to save Kylan.
Lennox saw Melina kneeling over Kylan and glared at them, and began to approach menacingly.
Kylan saw Lennox and swallowed harshly. “Melina. You need to go. Get Kyler and everyone else out of here.” He stared at her with unblinking deep green eyes.
Melina shook her head. “But I can’t leave you!” Her brown eyes filled with tears.
Lennox was almost to them, and she decided to take her time. After all, there was nowhere for them to go. Let them think they’ll escape.
Flare gritted her teeth and stood up with effort. “Lennox,” she forced out. “Don’t you want a harder target? They’re easy. You can get them after me.”
Lennox stopped in her tracks and turned to look at Flare, considering her offer. “Okay,” she grinned. “Sounds like fun!”
Flare swallowed and stepped back. “Then come and get me.” She backed up and jumped out of the rip in the tent that Katana had created.
Lennox’s eyes lit up with excitement. “A hunt!” Lennox exclaimed. She ran after Flare. After all, X couldn’t resist a chase. She stopped, and turned back around to Akira, Kyler, Melina, Kymara, and Kylan. “Wait here.” Then she sprinted after Flare.
Katana quietly crept through the woods, silent as a mouse. She sidestepped around a tree that loomed out of the darkness and leaped over a mossy log. She found a flat stone and sat down on it. She sat, simply listening to the sounds of the forest for a time until she heard faint screams coming from the direction of the campsite. “What…?” Katana whispered. “Oh, no...Lennox!” The girl jumped up from her spot on the ground and darted through the forest, scarcely touching the ground. She reached the tent in record time just to see Flare run out of the tent. A strange thing stuck out of her side, and she limped slightly. Lennox followed closely behind, her red hair floating above her and her red eyes glowing with exhilaration. Katana’s heart skipped a beat and she raced after them. “Flare!” she screamed. Both Flare and Lennox stopped and turned around. Lennox’s mouth lifted up into a wide grin.
“Hey, Katana!” Lennox said. “Care to join us?”
Flare’s face fell. “Katana, run! She’s-!” Flare’s face went slack and she crumpled to the ground.
Lennox rolled her eyes. “Can’t have her spoiling the fun, now can we?” Lennox tilted her head towards Flare. “She wanted a death wish by asking for me to go after her instead. Now, you have two choices.” She smiled coldly. “You can either hunt…” She held up two fingers. “Or be hunted.” -
Chapter Two: Sokushi
Kyler curled around the bolt that Lennox had shot into his stomach. The bolt’s diameter was about the size of a baseball, and the tip was serrated and razor-sharp, sending excruciating pain into his body. He gasped for air, but he couldn’t breathe.
Melina held her hand on Kylan’s stilling chest. He was almost gone, she’d have to work fast. Her fingers began to glow with a soft yellow light. Melina’s heart filled with relief. Her healing power still worked. Kylan’s wounds began to glow with the same yellow light, and slowly started closing up. As they closed, Melina gently pulled out the bolts. Finally, he was fully healed. His eyes fluttered open and he coughed and sat up.
“Melina,” he smiled. “You saved me.”
Melina sobbed with relief. “Of course.”
Kyler let out a groan as his hands grasped desperately at the bolt. Melina jumped up and ran over to him. Her hands glowed yellow and Kyler’s huge wound in his stomach began to heal. He relaxed as Melina pulled out the bolt, and in a moment he was restored. “Thank you,” he whispered.
Melina looked around the tent to see if she could heal anyone else and spotten Akira. She had backed into a corner, trying to get as far away as possible from Glyndwr, still eating.
Melina crept over to her, as quietly as she could. “Akira,” she muttered. “Your arm.” Akira nodded quickly and held out her arm. Melina took it in her hands and began to heal it. But for some reason, she was only able to fix it a little before the yellow light faded. “No,” she murmured. “Come on,” Melina strained to summon more energy, but nothing came.
Akira shook her head. “It’s okay, you tried.”
Melina clenched her fists. “I still need to heal Kymara!” The black haired girl gestured to the limp figure against the canvas of the tent. A bolt was sticking out of her chest, and her normally platinum hair was matted with blood. Her head must’ve hit something when she fell.
Akira grabbed Melina’s shoulder with her good arm’s hand. “It’s okay. We just need to go. Lennox could be back at any time.”
“But what about Flare…” Melina trailed off.
“Glyndwr is distracted. Flare saved us all, she can’t die for nothing. We need to go.”
Melina nodded sadly and ran over to Kylan, who was sitting up and looking at his stained hoodie in disgust. “Get up,” she said quickly. “We need to go. You and Kyler can carry Kymara, I can’t heal her.”
Kylan and Kyler nodded and picked up their sister, who let out a moan of pain. They slowly carried her out of the tent, careful not to touch the bolt.
Melina and Akira followed them, quietly so they didn’t attract the attention of the dragon.
Katana backed away, horrified, and touched her sword and namesake, katana, in its sheath. “Hunt or be hunted?” she echoed. “What kind of sick thing is that?”
Lennox sighed. “I thought you of all people, Katana, would understand. You being a trained assassin, and all. No matter.” Lennox’s eyes began to glow. “Let’s see if you live up to it.”
Lennox leaped at Katana, flying through the air unnaturally. Katana drew her sword. Sokushi, she called it. In Japanese, it meant Instant Death.
Katana held Sokushi still, and time seemed to slow. She saw things from an assassin’s perspective and thrust her sword out. The moment before it would’ve impaled Lennox, she disappeared in a cloud of shadow. Katana cursed under her breath. Lennox’s tricks were frustrating.
