Thread Topic: Favourite book quotes?
-
I have three that I'd like to share today. The first two are from Stephen King's Misery. I'm not a big King fan, but I love both of these quotes because I feel they are true and important.
The first on reads,
"It was never for you, Annie, or all the other people out there who sign their letters "Your number one fan." The minute you start to write all those people are at the other end of the galaxy, or something. It was never for my ex-wives, or my mother, or for my father. The reason authors almost always put a dedication on a book, Annie, is because their selfishness even horrifies themselves in the end."
Now, in true King fashion he takes on a cynical tone throughout the quote. However, I choose to think of the quote another way: the best writers write for themselves, not for other people. That's something I take to heart and I have a paper with the quote on it in my wallet.
The second is a little funnier.
"Writing may be masturbatory, but God forbid it should be an act off autocannibalism."
That one makes me laugh but it also says something important, too. It's in the context of the main character writing an autobiography about his traumatic experience.
My final quote comes from Alexandre Dumas' The Three Musketeers.
"What on earth do you mean, you ass?"
no explanation. just funny. -
"If we had a keen vision and feeling of all ordinary human life, it would be like hearing the grass grow and the squirrel's heart beat, and we should die of that roar which lies on the other side of silence."
From some dude named George Elliot I guess, but I first saw it in the front of The Knife of Never Letting Go, by Patrick Ness (my favorite author)
I don't actually care about the quote or its relevance to the story though
For whatever reason my younger brother didn't like hearing that quote so my sister and I memorized it and would just recite it to drive him crazy -
This was a good idea :D
Well I don't read many books other than for school but here goes nuthin
From The Yearling:
"Well, son, you cain't go thru life chunkin' things at all the ugly women you meet."
That's just plain funny :P
From Huckleberry Finn:
"You owdacious puppy!"
For some reason that always cracks me up XD
And then a few from The Chronicles of Narnia which I stg is the only legit book series I own (blame my mom, not me):
"No great wisdom can be reached without sacrifice."
(The Magician's Nephew)
"Do not dare not to dare."
(The Horse and His Boy)
"If you can't ride, can you fall?"
"I suppose anyone can fall," said Shasta.
"I mean can you fall and get up again without crying and mount again and fall again and yet not be afraid of falling?"
(Also The Horse and His Boy)
Then there's the famous Puddleglum monologue from The Silver Chair which I don't particularly feel like pecking out at the moment.
