The room is quiet. Nothing but the sound of shallow footsteps steadily treading atop the dark oak floorboards and the nonstop crackling of lit torch fire along the walls, their flames steady but burning with the intensity of a honed warrior. But despite these sounds, they are drowned out by the unwavering gaze of one man who sits atop his throne, his piercing stare able to send thoughts of self-doubt to even the most bold of humans. This stare, this disapproving scowl, came from the leader of Kiltguard, Shaemus Icehammer.
I soon stand before this man among men, the only thing separating us being a sturdy wooden desk covered by the pelt of a Black Bear, the ferocity on its dead-yet-lively face second to no animal other than the three heads drooping down around Shaemus's throne, those three fierce expressions belonging to the pelt of a Manticore.
Ready to break the tension, I speak, my voice shattering the empty feeling that engulfed this chamber. "Hail and well met, King Shaemus. I have little doubt that you know my name, King Kragsmire, seeing as you yourself arranged this meeting with me. I do hope you do not mind my two guards accompanying me during this meeting. It is but a precaution to ensure nothing unfortunate becomes of me." My voice, though I wish it to be smooth and confident, can't help but expose my uneasiness in relation to my current situation. Even the guards, while behind me, quietly tremble in their suits of chain armor, the rattling of each iron circlet clanging up against each other hopefully audible to my sensitive tiefling ears only. Tis would be embarrassing to be so afraid of another king, would it not?
King Shaemus Icehammer does not reply immediately, but rather takes his time to observe the two guards and myself, my keen eyes able to follow his eyes shifting between us. Is he making note of our clothes? Checking us for hidden weaponry? He is a smart man indeed, though I am somewhat insulted over the fact that he does not trust me. Yes, tensions between our two kingdoms have been a bit... Uneasy, as of late, but I have yet to assassinate anyone in my lifetime. Or maybe he's-... My train of thought is put on hold as Shaemus finally raises his voice, clearing his throat with a firm grunt before talking. "Your guards are of no bother to me. If I were to call you here to kill you, they would be dead already anyhow. Luckily for you, that is not the case. No, I call you to my quarters today to discuss our border issues we've been dealing with." His powerful voice, not once wavering, echoes through the whole room and only empowers his already ever-looming presence.
