Ashley and Matthias skipped into their house. They where back from holiday at last! Ashley went back and brought their baby brother, Travis in, and they where followed by their sister Hallie. Matthias headed to the basement, where he'd play computer games. Travis crawled into the kitchen, babbling happily. Ashley followed him, hearing a strange crackling sound. Fire! And Travis was crawling right towards it! Ashley rushed forward to grab him, pulling him back. Behind her, Hallie cried out. Worried, Ashley whipped around to see flames burning up her sister's hand. Forgetting all about Travis, she thrust the younger girl's hand into the cold tap and ran water over it. Hallie stopped crying, but Ashley turned and saw-
Travis was sitting the other side of a roaring fire. Flames had consumed a pot on the stove, and the burning handle pointed towards Travis. He reached out, beaming, and grabbed the hot blue and white flames. They where so hot to be that colour! Horrified, Ashley reached forward and grabbed the baby boy. His face was consorted with pain, she could see his bones. The flames didn't seem to hurt the brave older sister, she reached forward through them, ignoring the fact that she was now on fire. She pulled the baby out and shoved his whole burning body under the water she had run for Hallie. The water washed away the burned flesh and bone, now both sister and baby brother where good as new. Hallie leaned toward her sister in the wreckage, Matthias came up and stood beside them. "Well," he said, "Something like this just happened to me in Minecraft."
Ashley woke up, still looking around for the fire. No crackling. There was no cooling water, no baby in her arms. She got dressed and headed downstairs for breakfast.
She found the most enormous corn flake ever, and put it aside to show her siblings when they came inside. Already, she could see Matthias and Hallie swinging high on the hammock. Travis was playing happily on the floor.
After eating, Ashley brushed her teeth and put her invisalign back in. She was going to the orthodontist this afternoon; she didn't want them dirty.
Ashley went out and played with Matthias and Hallie, swinging them high. Hallie laughed. The rest of the morning past quickly. Ashley went inside and started programming on the computer. She was making a game. She was disturbed by Matthis calling, "Ashley, come quick! I hear the ice cream truck!" Ashley, of course, was told because she'd want an ice cream and she had the longest legs for chasing it. She leapt up and ran down the street after the truck, which stopped for her, giving Matthias and Hallie time to catch up.
"Two sandwhich cookies and one of those multi-coloured ice cream sandwhiches, please." they ordered. Travis was not yet one; it was a strict family rule that chocolate was a treat for your first birthday and not before, and the ice creams had chocolate in them. Matthias handed the man the money. "Wait for change," the man cautioned; Matthias usually would run off and leave Ashley to collect change.
Ashley, Matthias and Hellie sat on the porch eating their ice creams. Ashley felt a rush of joy, today was turning out perfectly.
Later, when Ashley and Matthias where swinging on the hammock, really high, so high that when you looked down you saw what should be behind you in front of you, and almost the sky, their mother Racquel called them. "Time to see Dr. King!"
Dr. King was the orthodontist. Ashley feverently hated him. He had an obsession with being cute. The only reason Ashley was even there was because if not, her teeth would grow through her gums and she'd live her whole life in agony.
They arrived. Ashley dragged her feet, her mind full of worry. She wished with all her heart she was somewhere else, anywhere else.
She went in and lay on the chair, her whole body wracked with fear, worry, anger, sadness and more that she didn't understand. Finally Dr. Kind leaned over her after doing the invisalign checkup. "Say you want to be cute!" he said. Ashley cringed. But her mother had told her to really do what he told her to..
"I want to be cute." she forced it out, then tears dripped down her cheek. She had had to lie. She most certainly did not want to be cute! She wanted to be strong and tough, but not cute.
Finally, they left. But..with a problem.
The woman had come in smiling and handed Racquel two packets. "This is all I have for you today," she said. "You must have numbers 17 to 23 at home already."
'No!' Ashley felt like screaming in horror. Because Ashley didn't have any more invisalign packets!
Racquel her mother looked puzzled too, but she nodded. 'You must have them," she said to Ashley. "When we get home I want you to show me your invisalign system."
Ashley felt awful. She didn't have a system. She'd have to make one, quickly.
They drove back. "Just to Jewel and Trader Joes. We need burger buns and gas." said Racquel. It was burgers for dinner, Ashley knew.
They bought food at Jewel Osco, paid for gas then went to swap their old propane container for a new one. The man came out. He looked weird, walked weird, and talked weird. Ashley, Matthias, Hallie and Travis waited in the car for their mother; she should only be a few seconds.
But she was half an hour. Finally, mad, she got back into the car.
There was no gas left.
They drove to Ace hardware, they'd have gad. But after many long, infuriating minutes, they said that they would not refill the gas.
Now so angry they where almost crying, Travis really was crying because he hated the car, they drove home. As they past a Walgreens, Matthias cried out, "There! Gas machines!" and yes, there where those things that look like vending machines but hold gas tanks!
Racquel got out and went inside. Ashley prayed that they might get gas here, so that they could have dinner.
Racquel came back with a cheerful worker. She got out a tank of gas, took the old one, and the family went home.
Ashley did the dishwasher, rescuing Travis, who tried to climb into it, then showed her mother her quickly assembled 'system', that she'd made by stuffing everything in the two shoeboxes they where kept in. "That is not a system!" Racquel cried, almost sobbing. Helplessly Ashley stood there ashamed, then organized them. At least her mother wasn't too angry with her. She showed her mother. By now they where talking about the missing invisalign, both swearing they'd never had them in the house. They hadn't.
The mother rang up the orthodontist office, who listened to her, then set off to look.
Racquel cooked dinner while Ashley entertained the children. Before it was served, the orthodontist rang up to say they'd found the invisalign braces packets 17 through 23 and did they want to come and pick them up now? "Not right now," said Racquel, "what about Monday?" But there would be nobody in the office on Monday. "Tuesday?" But there was nobody in on Tuesday. Ashley needed those invisalign packets by Tuesday evening.
Just then, Ashley's father Paul came home from work. Racquel quickly told him about the invisalign problem, then they and the orthodontist decided that Paul could come and pick up the invialign packets right then.
Paul went off after hearing where the office was, and the family sat down to dinner. Paul returned triumphant with the packets, and Ashley gratefully took them and put them away. Paul told her that Dr. King said she was doing very well. Well, Ashley didn't care what he thought. But as long as the braces weren't going wrong, all was well.
The kids ate some cookies on the hammock, each giving one cookie to Travis. Ashley smiled. Now, life was turning out okay. Good, even.
Matthias and Hallie soon had to go to bed. Ashley helpfully put away the hammock for the night, packed up cups and cookie packets, sand Paul his theme song:
I have something in my pocket,
It belongs upon my face.
I keep it very close to me,
In a most convenient place.
I bet you'll never guess i -
I bet you'll never guess it,
If you guess a long long while,
So I'll take it out and put it on,
It's a great big crocodile!
Paul had this thing about crocodiles.
After her siblings went to bed, Ashley settled down to write the tale of the day. The Tragedy Today. -
