Sehkmet and the Near Destruction of Mankind
Ra grew old. Seeing this, the people began murmuring against him. These murmurs soon grew into plots.
The plotters hid on the edges of Egypt, hoping to escape Ra's wrath.
Ra, however, heard their evil plans. He called a secret council of the gods. "What shall we do," he said sadly, "these my creations have grown evil."
The gods decided to send lion-headed Sehkmet to destroy the evil race. Sehkmet departed, and wherever she went, all in her sight where killed.
Ra saw this and was sorry. Not all mankind was evil. He decided to stop Sehkmet.
"You must stop killing men," he said to her, but the goddess's anger would not be calmed. She went to sleep and could not wait for the morning, when she could begin her killing again.
That night while Sehkmet slept Ra went to a temple. The High Priest and the slave girls made red dye and strong beer. They put the dye in the beer and mixed it so it looked like blood. Ra poured it on the field where Sehkmet would begin her killing.
When the goddess went down to slaughter more men, she saw the beer. Thinking it a great pool of blood, she waded into it and drank it. She found it good and drank more until it was all gone. The goddess became drunk and staggered up to the throne of Ra, where she slept for many days. When she woke, the rage was gone. "Does your head ache?" asked Ra. "Do you feel ill?" Thus sickness first came to Egypt.
