Too Late
The Oklahoma wind tossed Andrew's dark brown hair, the rising sun hitting his tan skin. He gently raised his head so as to soak up the cool summer morning air. Cars passed by Andrew as he walked along asphalt. A driver might think that Andrew looked troubled. His brow was furrowed anxiously and he seemed to be in deep thought. But nobody knew how much he had changed their world. They didn't know what he had changed, who he had killed.
"I had to do it..." Andrew muttered in self-reassurance. "For everyone."
The brown haired teen took from his pocket a notepad and pen as he came to a cross-walk. He breathed in deeply and began to hastily write a letter on the thin, lined paper, the patchy grass swaying around his sandal clad feet.
It wasn't supposed to affect this much. I only meant to kill one man. James and I had snuck into his father's lab. We climbed into the machine. I didn't know it would affect this much. We just thought that if we could go back to the Titanic and find John Grace, if we could kill him, we would save so many people from the dictatorship he would build, from the mass genocide he would commit in America. We got desperate. I steered the large boat towards the iceberg and..it crashed. I'll never forget James' blue eyes widened in horror, how he screamed, and how he faded from my embrace. Thanks to my stupid decision, the machine only existed long enough for James and I to return. But it was too late. Then he...vanished with the machine. His ancestors must have been on the boat. Now, so many things aren't invented. The time machine, the SONY Playstation 9, the hologram phone..all gone. I killed them. I killed James.
Andrew's hand ached as he dropped the pen and notepad. The busy street seemed indifferent to his solemn presence. He walked forward. No, he leapt. He leapt so that a shiny silver Ford may become tainted by the boy's red blood.
A screech echoed in the periwinkle sky, but it was too late. -
