Chapter Two; Teacher
As he looked around, he realized that he wasn't anywhere near his 'home'. He was in a hospital. Though it wasn't clear how he knew where he was, he knew that he was at a place where people got better. At least, that's what Teacher said. He sighed, starting to turn his head. He missed Teacher, and he wondered if he even knew what had happened to Shadow.
His heart stopped when he realized he wasn't alone. A shape was sitting in a chair that was on his right side. A soft noise escaped his throat, and he gazed in amazement at whoever it was. Shadow didn't really know anyone, not any adults, anyways, and he wondered who it was. He scooted to the side of the bed, peering contently at the person. They were all wrapped up in a blanket, and from the soft noises coming from them, they were sleeping.
The raven haired boy held out a hand, prepared to touch the shape, but it shot back in fear. What if they were a stranger.. That was going to eat him!? He quickly scooted back, his eyes wide and fearful. He wanted to scream at them to go away, but it hurt him just to swallow his own spit down. Now his heart was aching with the effort of keeping him alive and pounding fast to show his fear. Shadow groaned, thinking to himself, If I'm not dead yet, I'm gonna die now. I'mma be dead in like.. Five minutes..
As he thought about this, he didn't notice the shape moving. He only noticed the person when they were standing from their seat and moving over to him. Scared, he opened his mouth as if to let out a scream, but the person dropped the blanket and showed himself. The man was tall, far taller than Shadow, and he had the messiest blonde hair Shadow had ever seen. His green eyes were sparkling in the low light, and a grin was on his face. The little boy's face turned from that of a horrified one to an overjoyed one.
"Teacher!" Shadow squealed in delight, nearly tossing himself off the bed into the man's arms. "Teacher, oh, Teacher! When did you get here? Oh, that doesn't matter! You're here! You're really here! Wait, am I dead? Are you dead? Are we in heaven?" Soon, his face when from happiness to a quite confused look. The adult stared at him for a moment before chuckling and moving to Shadow's side.
"Unfortunately for you, Shadow, I am not dead. Nor are we in heaven. You might have been, though, if a certain guilty one hadn't run into my room to tattle tale on himself." Teacher sat on the foot of the bed, resting his hand on Shadow's foot. The child giggled, smiling at him. "You're lucky that Tom was so scared of himself. I might not have been able to get help so quickly without his help." However, the older's smile faded, and his expression turned dark.
"Teacher..?" Shadow asked, wondering why he looked upset.
"..Shadow, Tom came to me.. An hour after you were thrown in. No, more like two. Two hours. You were under that river for two hours. Physically, you should be dead. Ah, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you," the blonde added with an apologetic look as Shadow stared at him in horror. "I.. Well, when I told them what had happened, they didn't believe me. Thought I was bluffing. The funny thing is, my dear boy, you were pale. Like you were dead. But when they pulled you out, you were almost dry. Like you had gotten out of a shower and your hair was only slightly damp. And, you.. You were breathing, my dear boy." Teacher paused, running a hair through his messy hair. Shadow only stared in fear, afraid Teacher would be scared of him. "You know, I thought the other children were bluffing when they said you had abnormal powers. But it looks like you have some. And these powers, they kept you alive. I'm not complaining, though. I don't want my favorite boy to die. But you really must be prepared to get questioned, alright?"
Shadow had no response for his only companion. For starters, he was only about five or six, and all of it was a lot to take in. Not to mention, there really was no logical explanation. The little boy could only make out one thing out of Teacher's words: He should have been dead. He really was a freak.
Before he could stop himself, the young boy started crying. His sobs were cracked, like he was dying, and he nearly choked while sobbing, but he couldn't find the courage to stop. His head fell into his hands, and he just sat there, shaking and crying with no strength. Teacher reached out a hand to touch him, but he was blocked. For something far beyond the norm was happening to the boy.
Shadows were starting to cover him like a shell. The shadow from the chair, the shadow from that one picture frame, the shadow from the empty water glass- shadows from around the room were being tugged from their spots to cover the boy. They moved sluggishly slow, but they were fast enough to have stopped Teacher. The man inhaled deeply, pulling his hand back from the boy with an awkward look. On the inside, he was afraid- afraid of Shadow. But he loved the boy to death, almost as a son, and he couldn't bring himself to say it. He could only watch as the shadows crawled over the young boy's skin and seemed to comfort him.
When Shadow decided he had spilled enough tears and had choked enough, he rose his head, looking at Teacher. In a voice too soft for most to hear, he asked, "Teacher, my throat is sore. Could you grab my cup and fill it with a little bit of water?"
Teacher walked over to the table, his eyes locked on Shadow- no, his eyes locked on the shadows. He picked up the cup, looking at his reflection. He was glad his fear wasn't showing. The adult shuffled to the sink, filling the cup up with water. Over and over, he was telling himself that Shadow was just Shadow and he was a sweet boy. He hadn't asked for the power to be.. Whatever he was. But he found himself both loathing and fearing the boy he had once looked at as someone completely different.
When Shadow looked up a second time, Teacher was by his side once more, holding out the cup. The raven took it gratefully, his silver eyes scanning the water as he drank from the cup. The water felt good running down his throat, but he made sure to drink it slowly so as to not choke any more. He also knew he had plenty of water still in his lungs, and didn't want more to get stuck there.

With a curious face, the young boy poured the small amount of water onto the shadows. At first, it looked like the water was going through them to his skin, but then it dissolved. It amazed him. "I think I found out how I lived, Teacher. Isn't this cool?" Shadow smiled with new found happiness, looking up at his best adult friend. Teacher merely smiled back, nodding. "While that is cool, we have a problem. Before your shadowy friends got to you, you inhaled a lot of water. Your lungs are still battling to keep you alive. So while the shadows played their part with their sorcery, I'm afraid that you yourself could die. They can't get into your body to keep you safe. I'm sorry, Shadow..." Teacher sighed, reaching out a hand to stroke his hair. Shadow laid down on the bed, sending the shadows back to the corner. His heart was starting to beat wildly again. He hadn't thought about it like that. And it was true, he could potentially die. Again, the fear took him over and tears were at the sides of his eyes. He didn't want to die, not at all. -
For a while, Shadow and Teacher sat in silence, both refusing to say another word out of respect for each other. It was then that a doctor opened the door, breaking the silence with the loud creak. "Shadow's due for surgery. We have to get the water out of his lungs, and unfortunately, he's got some damaged organs as well. He may not live to see another day, so finish up here so we can move him to a room." The doctor sounded displeased, almost bored, as if he couldn't care less about the kid. Teacher smiled sadly at Shadow, kissing his forehead. "If you survive this, kiddo, I promise I'll adopt you as my own son. I'm going to retire soon, and it'd be nice to have some company." He pulled away and walked out of the room.
Shadow stayed silent as he was transferred to another room. He couldn't contain his emotions. He was upset that he could die, but happy that Teacher promised to adopt him if he made it through alive. He wanted to survive- he wanted to see Teacher. He wanted to be with him for the rest of his life. When Shadow had been secured to a table, they put the gas mask over his mouth and turned it on. He smiled as he started to breathe in. Teacher, I'm going to get through this, just for you. I love you like a father, Teacher. I'm going to stay alive! -
NOOO MY FIRST FEW PARAGRAPHS GOT CUT OFF f---KKKKKKKKKKKKK CRIES
Wake up, Shadow. Wake up. WAKE UP--
Shadow opened his eyes with a start, wincing as he noticed that his head was throbbing in pain. He tried to inhale, but the action caused himself immense pain. He broke out in coughs, coughs that shook him to his core and made him hurt worse. He tried to look at the ceiling, something, anything, but everything was fuzzy. Displaced. Alien to the young boy.
He decided to try to take things slower and sat up, closing his eyes for a moment before opening them and staring down at himself. The first thing he noticed was the IV that had been jabbed into his arm. He hadn't felt the pain before, but now that he was staring at it, it sure was starting to hurt. The boy decided it would be best to try looking elsewhere.
His eyes moved down to his body, or what he could see that wasn't covered by the thin blanket. He was dressed in a blue paper-like dress, and he could tell that was all he had, for his bottom was cold and his back was touching the scratchy pillow. He gazed at himself for a while longer before looking elsewhere. -
