  Actually, Gally in the book was short for Gallitou, I didn't spell that right though. :)
  Because the people gave them all nicknames from famous scientists and inventors. No spoilers there, you read that in the first book and I heard from my mom that they didn't mention that in the movie. Along with many other things...
