Susan would have learned the joy of sleeping on long bus rides her tenth year, if it hadn't been for that boy who always sat across from her. It wasn't that he talked, but rather that he never talked, and sat there writing in a little blue notebook about something she could only guess. She wanted badly to ask him, but despite the fact that they got off at the same stop, she was never able to work up the courage to do so.
Today was different, though. She had promised herself on the first day of that week, by Friday she would have asked him. It was Friday. Her last chance to pry into the boy's private little world.
The bus slid to a stop in front of a line of houses. Susan and the boy stood, and he paused, holding an arm out, motioning for her to go first, which she did. The walkway was littered with other student's legs, candy wrappers, and dirt tracked in from the dusty school yards. It was a dangerous place, because if you weren't careful about how you picked your way through the outstretched limbs, well.. A kid had broken his nose once, forgetting how to walk when a bag intruded on his path. Susan moved slowly, until she reached the stairs, which she took in two huge steps. The bus driver (Susan had neglected to learn her name, yet again) told them to have a good day, and handed the boy two lollipops, telling him to give one to Susan, which he did. They walked side by side in silence, unwrapping their candy as they headed to where their houses sat two apart, a little bit down the road. Finally, in a burst of courage, Susan asked, "So, Phillip, right?"
The blond shifted his lollipop to set in between his teeth and his cheek, nodding. "Mhm. And you're Susan? We have Algebra two together."
"Oh," She paused to take her sucker out of her mouth, blushing a bit. "That's right. We do. Um," She began, mentally preparing herself to be called nosy and rude. "That notebook, what're you writing in it?" Phillip didn't answer right away, but shrugged, locking his eyes onto the object's blue color, as if he suspected she would snatch it away from him if he didn't. "Oh," He huffed, "Just a story."
"About?" She asked, popping the lollipop back into her mouth, twirling it around a few times before taking it back out. Phillip's voice was slurred, sounding funny because he still held the candy in his jaw. "A prinche," He answered, blushing a bit. Susan noticed, and decided that, despite the fact that he clearly didn't like her prying, kept going.
"A prince? Like, Prince Phillip?" She teased, nudging his shoulder with her own.
Phillip paused, inhaling a bit, shaking his head. "His little brother, actually," Susan nodded at his response, making a skeptical noise.
"Prince Phillip doesn't have a little brother, you know."
"It's ficthion. He does, in this sthory, anyways."
"Can I read it?" It was a stupid question, she realized, right after she had asked it. Susan pursed her lips, and waited for an answer. Phillip faltered in his walking, as if taken off guard by the question. However, he adjusted nicely, nodding, handing her the notebook without even looking at her. Susan settled it on her other books, bid Phillip goodbye as they parted ways, and headed towards her own house.
(I have to go now, but that's pretty much half of the start.) -
