Prologue
It may not seem so important, but there are starving cats out there and battles to be fought. Has they ever passed through your mind, Pike? The brown cat hissed from the top of the fence.
Pike, a red tabby cat with green eyes, hissed. Excuse me, Kestrel? She said in a dangerously low whisper.
Kestrel, the cat that spoke to Pike, fluffed up her brown fur. Im just saying that your cats are killing ours! She yelled.
Pike closed her eyes, as if to think. She let out a very forced smile then meowed through her grin of sharp teeth, Kestrel, your cats need to actually hunt like cats, not crashing through the forest like big dogs!
Being called a dog by a cat was the worst insult a cat could ever say. Dogs werent sly like cats, and they were smelly. They dont groom their fur and they were savages. The other cats gasped.
Kestrel growled, ready to lash another insult when a Russian Blue cat stepped forward.
I think this discussion is over, she said. Pike, you need to cut down on the prey, and Kestrel, you need to train your cats to hunt properly.
Lilac- Pike started.
Lilac held up her tail, blue eyes flashing in warning.
A black cat that seemed to melt into the shadows in the night lifted up his chin ad cleared his throat. Has it ever occurred to you that we need to have borderlines inside the forest to divide us up?
The other three cats tilted their heads, as if to think of what life would be like divided.
Kestrel looked up at the black cat. Thats a good idea. That way our cats could hunt on our own territories without the others getting in the way. She shot a smirk at Pike.
Pike lashed back, And that way other cats can actually learn to hunt in their territory!
Lilac fluffed up her fur. Would you two shut up and quit bickering like mockingbirds? She growled. Continue, Copper.
Copper, the black cat with eyes like chips of gold, nodded. Thank you. As I was saying, we would need something to know which territory we belong to.
Lilac lifted her chin slightly. My group can have collars, she offered. She was a former house cat. She already had on a green collar.
Good. What about you, Pike?
Bandanas! Pike said immediately.
Kestrel thought hard for a moment. My group can have a little nick on the ear or something, she said at last.
Shadow nodded. Good. And my group shall have a streak of color across their tail.
We need group names, Lilac observed.
Copper nodded. Lilacs group should be known as the Collars, Pikes group as the Bandanas, Kestrels group as the Nicks, and my group as the Streaks.
Lilac nodded. We need to gather up our groups and make territories, though.
Kestrel lifted up a paw. I call town! She said. We can live inside the town where the humans live. Not as house cats, of course, but as strays.
Copper tilted his head in wonder. Oh, odd choice, but okay. And you, Pike, where would you live?
We can get a section of the forest behind the town. Pikes group had always lived inside the forest.
My group can live by the river, where we can hunt fish, like we always do.
Copper nodded. Good idea. And my group shall live underground, beneath the sky and earth. We can find old rabbit tunnels and make them suitable for cat life!
The four cats cheered.
Copper flicked his tail. Meeting dismissed. And they all leaped down from the fence, creating the Four Groups: The Collars, Bandanas, Nicks, and Streaks.
Chapter One
All Bandanas, come and meet me at the borderline at sunset for a meeting! Pikes yell roared across the forest.
The Bandanas all nodded. They all had on some kind of bandana around their necks. Even the kits had them on.
A small silver tabby with one green eye and one blue eye was balancing on a branch inside the forest when she heard Pike yell.
Her name was Finchy. You may think that this was an odd name, but this was what her name was.
She had on a blue bandana with white polka dots on them. Nobody else in the entire Bandanas had a blue bandana with white polka dots but her. That made Finchy, the adventurous silver tabby cat with the multi-colored eyes Finchy.
She stretched out across the branch, watching the cats below her. They called this section of the forest the Hideout, where no other cat in the Four Groups knew about.
There were quite a few cats in the Bandanas. She could see Taji, a cream cat with a white chest and a light green bandana shouting orders. She was Pikes best friend. Taji was Second-Leader, like the deputy.
Finchy could also see her best friend, Sky, sitting in the middle of Hideout.
Sky was different. From a distance, she looked like a white cat. If you look very closely, Sky actually had the palest pink fur imaginable. Her green eyes made her fur look slightly pinker.
She had on a brown and white bandana. She tilted her head as if to listen to something.
Sky was the best tracker inside the Bandanas group. She had a nose that could smell anything and large paws that were good for digging.
Then Finchys other best friend came. His name was Singemask. He had a black bandanna and brown eyes. He looked just like a raccoon. He was like a cat-raccoon.
Singemask looked up at the tree Finchy was in. Finchy, get down from there! He called up.
Sky looked up at Finchy. Whatre you doing up there? She asked.
Finchy rolled her eyes. I was looking for a bird to catch or something!
She jumped down from the branch. It was about a fifty-foot jump, but Finchy had a special ability that made her able to jump high. She landed on her paws neatly.
Singemask curled up his raccoon-like tail over his back, a gesture that meant he was happy. Did you catch anything?
Sky rolled her eyes along with Finchy. Does it look like it, Coon-face?
Finchy laughed. Coon-face?
Coon-face is my new name, apparently, Singemask said.
Look, its almost sunset. Lets go grab a bite to eat and go to the border. Sky said and dashed off into the bushes, away from Hideout.
Singemask and Finchy dashed after her. Sky suddenly skidded to a halt, tail held up.
She leaped into the bushes and pulled out a squirrel and killed it with a quick swipe to the neck.
Well bring this to the border, Sky said. She picked up the squirrel in her mouth and started to walk on.
The ground was wet. It had rained the day before. Pine needles littered the ground and made the earth bumpy to walk on. Water dripped from the leaves above and sometimes plopped onto one of the cats heads or body.
Birds sang from the trees above. Finchy loved the sounds of birds. It was so soothing.
A murmur of voices started to overcome the noises of the birds. The bushes in front of them turned into a hedge, clipped into a rectangle by the humans beyond.
Hedges were often hard for cats to go through. The branches grew close together and overlapped. The leaves were spikey and stuck to cat fur.
But they had to go through the hedge to get to the border. On the other side of the hedge was a strip of fresh grass and then a fence. The fence was the border that separated the Bandanas and the Nicks. They were enemies to the death.
Finchy pushed the hedge with her head, ignoring the pain the tightly woven branches made. She pushed through with her paws and burst through the other side.
Sky and Singemask followed behind through the tunnel she made. They were the first ones there.
But they werent the only ones there. Two Nicks were sitting on top of the fence.
Go away, this is for a Bandanas meeting only, Singemask ordered.
The two cats laughed. The biggest one, black and white with green eyes, hissed in laughter. He almost fell off the fence laughing.
They each had a nick inside one of their ears. Two nicks inside the Nicks Group meant that you were an experienced Nick. They obviously werent.
Hey, newbies go away! Finchy called up to the two cats.
The other cat, just plain white with a nick inside his left ear, stopped laughing. Did you hear that, Swift?
Swi -
why wont the quotation marks show up? gah
Swift nodded. The pretty she-cat called us newbies. Maybe we should teach her a lesson?
Singemask hissed and rose up onto his hind legs. Claws unsheathed, he started to bat up at them. Get away!
Finchy nodded. Go and pick on someone your own size! She hissed loudly.
Swift flicked his ears. Ah, but you dont realize. And off he went.
I dont realize what? Finchy asked, tilting her head.
Cats started to come through the hedge bush. Pike looked at Finchys scowl. What happened?
Nick cats, she meowed back.
Pike nodded. Were going to talk about this.
The Bandanas all started to look around, confused. Mostly all meetings were held deep into the forest, where no other Group can hear the meeting.
Pike raised a paw. Everyone got quiet.
Finchy took a bite of squirrel. Singemask looked up, ears pricked, and Sky waited patiently.
Pike sat down in front of the line of cats. Next to her sat Taji, the cream and white cat with the green bandana.
Pike had on a white bandana as leader. She cleared her throat and looked at the crowd.
We are here because there is a spy among us, she meowed.
Gasps rang through the crowd. Finchys eyes widened.
Pike narrowed her eyes. There is nobody from the Nicks, because nobody in here has nicked ears. There is nobody from the Streaks because none of you guys have a streak of an unusual color on you. Someone in here is from the Collars!
The Collars! Everyone gasped. The Collars were the Bandanas best ally.
Theyve turned against us! Singemask yowled.
Finchy felt hatred burn through her pelt.
Pike shook her head. Quiet, quiet.
Taji nodded. So weve come and decided to make friends with the second most powerful group: The Nicks.
Singemask hissed so loud, Finchy had to turn away. This is outrageous!
Taji waited until they stopped hissing and yelling. They are the second most powerful! The first most powerful is us, but we cant go against the Collars. We may be powerful, but were not many. The Collars are weak and plentiful.
Pike nodded. Exactly my point. So, were going to bring a few cats with us to talk the Nicks into it.
She started to call out names. Taji, Singemask, Finchy, Leo, and Sunny, follow me.
Finchy and Singemask almost burst with excitement.
Sky was disappointed. Go ahead, she murmured.
Its okay, well tell you about it when we get back! Singemask called back.
Finchy launched herself over the fence. She felt herself falling then she hit something hard.
Sidewalks, Singemask explained.
Oh. Finchy felt the ground with her paws. It sure was weird.
Pike started to move pretty fast. Finchy had to run to keep up. Care drove by, making the cats pelts black with gravel.
Singemask hissed and padded up next to Finchy. Stupid Kestrel. Whyd she even want to make her home here, of all places?
Finchy smiled and shook her head. She used to be a house cat. Go figure. She couldnt even get her collar off.
