English was at the time very much a stem from the Germanic language family. Though after the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, French and Latin took a great deal of influence, and Old English became out of style. O.E. probably sounded much more like Nordic languages (besides Finnish), which seem to have held many of the qualities of what Proto-Germanic was like.
I wonder, how do you think history would have been different if the Normans hadn't won the invasion? If Old English went on and evolved in a different way do you think there still would have been a lot of influence from other languages? Would English have still been as widely used as it is today?
I don't know, I'm a nerd with this kind of stuff but I find it interesting. x3 I got the idea to write something from listening to this poem.
