If you look at it historically, you'll understand why society at one time ran that way. Men generally would go out as hunters, or as time went on, workers to bring home wealth to keep the family unit a float. Women generally staying closer to home, foraging and gathering, maintaining the household and mothering children. Each are valid jobs that need to get done.
Nowadays, because human life has become relatively easier, people tend to have more time and more choice on what jobs they want to pursue. There really isn't much different between men and women now, but the jobs still exist. So it depends on the household. Some men actually prefer to cook while some women do not. Stay at home dads would probably do more cooking since they're generally more in charge of daily house chores.
So to answer your question, the idea of women doing most of the cooking comes from history. -
I feel like I see a lot of threads with "women" in the title like in the front porch and wine cellar too...
