Thread Topic: Suggestion.
-
The lower your rank, the less threads you can make in a day. And maybe once you get to Junior or Experienced there would be no limit as most spammers are Newbie or Novice.
-
It's so weird that everyone's thinking of this now. We were just talking about this with GTQ Guy. It's definitely a possibility.
-
I hope it works because it would prevent spammers.
-
It wouldn't necessarily prevent them, but it would make it more difficult and time-consuming for them to spam. Thank you for putting thought into it.
-
Personally think that isn't a good idea. I get that this is to prevent spammers from spamming, but what about the normal users?
-
You're welcome.
If someone's post limit has gone up within a month they should have a limit of the number of threads made, so if the normal users don't do anything wrong they won't get affected. -
Ah.. That could work, I guess.
-
Probably.
-
In reality, the average user doesn't need to create more than a couple threads a day. Newer users would be forced to put more thought into their threads, and this might actually help to better the sense of community on this site, since half the threads made are inhabited by only two or three users.
I don't know about that. Trolls are using the offensive button to attack innocent users. The less harm they can do with this tactic, the better. -
I've seen most users create 1 or 2 threads a day and they know what will happen if they create useless threads.
-
I've been thinking about this for a while, and would like to give my reasoning for it as well.
1. It'll build community, like Maru said. Reduced thread posting will encourage users to actually stick to threads and engage in full conversation, rather than posting individual things that serve more as little updates (think posting a status update to Facebook or tweeting something-- a short little statement about a generally small event that has little to it for discussion). I'm not saying that sharing about activity isn't important, but GTQ's forums have always been unique in the sense that "general discussion (or offbeat/lounge)" seems to be based more in socialization than in actual discussion. Please ask me to explain if this doesn't make sense, I'm having trouble explaining it.
2. Fewer threads means that it's easier to find the ones that matter. Instead of having to dig through 10 pages worth of threads posted today, you'll only have to dig through, say, 3. This would be especially helpful on subforums like the Stage, where most threads have fairly similar titles and are a bit ridiculous to go through. It would also be nice on the Lounge, if a thread isn't bookmarked or easy to find with the search feature on the home page.
3. It'll reduce spam. Most spam accounts are made within a week or so of their spam floods, meaning that they're only at a newbie level. If the posting of threads is restricted and can only be bumped by an increase in status level, spammers will have to put a lot of effort into leveling their account or use an older, leveled one (which would probably be suspended after a ton of spam or already associated with the spammer's main account). It won't stop spamming, but it has the potential to make it a lot harder.
4. It'll reduce annoying/unnecessary threads. You guys complain about people immediately "reporting" someone here, or about TBH trends on the Study. It won't eliminate them completely, but it will reduce them.
The main drawback I can see with this is finding a way to explain it. As a solution, I think it would be nice to allow threads to be stickied (right now I'm thinking of FAQ threads), so that new users wouldn't show up and ask about this every month or two. -
Or how about we just leave it as it is
-
1 - Yes, sticking to 1 or 2 threads means that users will find it easier to talk to people rather than a lot of threads.
2 - I agree, it would save a lot of time.
3 - It usually takes a few months to level up to Junior, which I've barely seen any spammers at that level or above, so if Junior was the first level to have unlimited number of threads made in a day, there would be much less spam.
4 - Some good ideas would be like 'Report trolls here' thread instead of having a bunch of useless threads with a similar meaning and have 1 thread for tbhs.
This thread is locked, therefore no new posts can be made.
