So this isn’t going to be your classic “Draw two circles and connect them”. I’ll be telling you how to create your own stylized cat. Alright, let’s get into it!
-
1st
Look at pictures of cats, what stands out to you about each feature the most? Do you feel like the eyes are a certain shape? How about the nose, ears, or eyebrows? -
2nd
What features you want to pronounce the most? Do you want to make the nose bigger, or the eyes? Do you want realistic proportions or exaggerated features? -
Realistic:
- the proportions are very similar/the same to those of a real cat.
- the nose, eye, ears, mouth shapes are all the same as those of a real cat.
-
Stylized:
- eyes, nose, and ears are all different shapes and sizes than a real cat’s eyes, moss, and ears would really be.
-
Semi-Realistic:
- this one is a mix between realistic and stylized
- while being, obviously, a stylized cat, it’s proportions are still similar to a cat’s.
- the eyes and ears are larger than a cat’s eyes, but the nose isn’t.
-
Developing your own style is going to take time.
I started off drawing how other people drew, until I was able to combine different art styles to create one that has a mix of what I like to draw.
- I draw eyes larger on smaller cats, to signify either innocence or cuteness.
- Muzzles and noses will be larger on cats that are older, and smaller muzzles and noses for smaller cats.
- Big ears signify that a character is observant and quiet.
^ those aren’t to tell you how to draw, but just me noting on how I draw cats. -
As for anatomy, use a reference. Tracing is OKAY. No matter what others tell you, tracing is alright to reference from. I began drawing cats by tracing artists’ drawing and figuring out how they structured the cat. Don’t trace and post it as your own, that’s not allowed.

Use real life images. Take a cat picture off of the internet, and try and define shapes that you see:
-
Then change the proportions. Make the legs longer if you want, or shorter. Make the tail longer, or the paws larger.
It all depends on what you want the final product to look like. If you want more realism, leave the shapes be. If you want a stylistic cat, dramatically change the shapes. -
