I'm going to keep this one short...but I've read many people saying "Anime limits your style" blahblahblah.
I'm not denying that completely, Yes, in ways it DOES limit your style....HOWEVER Doesn't EVERYTHING limit your style?
You're picking a style and you're trying to specialize it so, of course when you switch to something else it's going to be more difficult!
When I first started out drawing... I had people scold me saying I should draw realism, because it was better.
Why??
In my opinion, realism is boring and you're tied to a lot of strings....for example
You're restricted to what physics allows you to do, gravity allows you to do, how far your muscles can stretch etc etc. Realism you can't fly through the air, you can't jump building to building, you can't (unless you have intense muscles) lift a car, you can't stay underwater for excessive amounts of time (unless... you train to do so). you can't kick someone into the sky, if you jump off a really high building, you can die.
Cartoony and Anime style artwork (or abstract) You can achieve anything. Of course, you don't want your picture to look awkward...but... Realism? In my opinion is limiting.
Sure people often view, anime especially (I don't see as much 'CARTOONY LIMITS YOU >:I' )
As negative.
Why? because often it's always the same body type...same structure. But....Hey, You're just drawing what comes to mind right? This is your interpretation of what your character looks like.
I don't see the limits: there's so many different styles when it comes to cartoony syles, and anime styles.
Just something to think about:
Realism is realism, when you draw a person, they have to look a certain way.
Anime or Cartoony styles? You can draw that character in many different styles- I can make them slightly more realistic, I can make them look ridiculous, I can give them fantasticccccc expressions whether it is possible or not.
Limiting? I think not.
Again I can see how it can be limiting, but I don't necessarily see it as limiting. -
I agree.
