While Ive been diagnosed with social anxiety and GAD, the symptoms of selective mutism resonate with me. When I am with close friends or family, conversing feels natural, I dont keep my voice lowered, I say more than a few words at at time, I dont constantly feel the need to be polite, and I dont think that they think Im a rude, weird, or unkind person. Yet it appears there is an involuntary switch when I am around my peers at school. All of the things I listed above that I dont feel, I do feel. Its so horrible and I know that Im not the fragile, shy girl that everyone at school thinks I am. Thats what makes it all the more frustrating. Today at school someone announced to the class, I love how I can speak freely to everyone! Well, except for one person. Another one seconded it and said, Yeah, youre not the only one that feels that way about that one person. And by that one person of course they meant me. I felt humiliated and wanted to cry and run out of the classroom. But I didnt. I wouldnt give them another reason to think Im a unapproachable. Plus, if they wanted to call me out, I couldnt draw more attention to myself. And for all of this and the things I never said, I hate myself.

Most of people confuse Selective Mutism whit Social Anxiety or Autism. It's just that some disorders look like other disorders, but they are different.

When I am at school I do not speak until spoken too, around my friend's I don't even feel comfy with them but I talk with them but not comfy. I don't talk to anyone unless asked to both at home and school unless I am talking to myself that is different.
