  1. These caves are formed on floating glaciers and have about 7 metres high entrances.
  2. What lies inside is spell-binding. The ice absorbs all visible light, except the blue colour, which is why the caves appear blue to the naked eye, and the daylight entering from both sides adds to all the magic.
  3. Ice caves are temporary structure that appear at the edge of glaciers.
  4. They are in general, unstable things and can collapse at any time.
  5. They are safe to enter only in winter, when the cold temperatures harden the ice. They look amazingly beautiful from the inside..
  6. This particular cave is located on the frozen lagoon of a glacier in Skaftafell,Iceland.
  7. The centuries old ice contains almost no air bubbles.
  8. The lack of air means that it absorbs almost all visible light, apart from the blue fraction, which is then visible to the naked eye, making the caves appear blue.
  9. So, where all can this blue ice be seen? It can be seen only under certain circumstances. It can be seen in winter after long periods of rain when the surface layer of the glacier has been washed away. It is most commonly seen in ice caves like this one, and on floating icebergs.
