Significant Figures

Significant figures are numbers that determine the accuracy and precision of a quantity. All numbers from 1-9 are significant. (Zeroes are usually not significant, but there are exceptions to this rule.)

  16. "A gas occupies 15.0 liters at a pressure of 2.00 ATM. What is the volume when the pressure is raised to 5.00 ATM?" The answer to this problem is is exactly SIX LITERS. How many significant figures should be used in this answer?
  17. "A gas occupies 3.30 liters at a temperature of 30.00 degrees Celsius. What would its volume be at a temperature of 74.25 degrees Celsius?" The answer to this question is 8.1675 LITERS. How many significant figures should the answer be rounded to?
  18. "A gas occupies 32.0 liters at a temperature of 100.0 degrees Celsius. In order for the gas to occupy 20.0 liters, what would the temperature have to be?" The answer is 62.5 degrees Celsius. (Which should be in Kelvin, but it doesn't matter.) How would you round this number to the correct number of significant figures?
