Quincenera is not a northern New Mexican tradition or culture, maybe in southern NM--these settlements came about in the early 1800,s by Mexicans coming north. But the original New Mexican (Spanish), since 1598 and to this day, el norteno or Nuevo Mexicano does not celebrate quincenera; this is a foreign celebration in N.M. This is a Mexican holiday. New Mexico got its name in 1560 by Spanish explorers. Mexico did not get it name until 1820. The Spanish settled in northern New Mexico before the United States and Mexico became nations. New Mexico was not an extension of Mexico or named after Mexico. N.M. was named after the Mexica Aztec in Mexico City for the treasures found in their lands with hopes for new treasure discoveries in exploring New Mexico.
