I realise I'm going to come off as an obsessed nut, but "The Golden Compass" isn't a book. It's the name of the movie adaptaion of "Northern Lights" which is nothing like the film and Philip Pullman would roll over in his grave (were he dead....perhaps he rolls over in his sleep?) for being grouped with Tolkein.
