I grew up riding. I love it so much and continue to ride today. Even competitively. However, what are your opinions about it? Any experiences? And do you even think it's a sport?
-
Hmm, I think it's kind of a sport... I never went horse back riding..
-
I love it. I stopped riding competitively when I was 11 because I moved onto soccer and AFL. I did showjumping, dressage and x-country. It was fun. But unfortunately I had to move back to the city, selling my horse and tack. I rode English and had a couple of Western camps and it was awesome! I love horses. Such beautiful creatures.
Now, about that sporting bit...eh, it's more of the horse doing all of the work. Sure, it supports your muscles and legs and gives good posture but as a sport? EQUESTRIAN RIDING IS A SPORT!!! But mainly, it's the horse doing the work and the rider commanding using the reins or stirrups.
HOWEVER, I'm against rodeo shows opened up for entertainment. Such as the Cheyenne Rodeo. Horses die every now and then in those shows...yet it is still legal and supported. It's cruel and stupid to use ANY ANIMAL for entertainment, sport or not. I don't give a f--- if rodeo is a sport, but rodeo shows that are opened up for entertainment just for the money, resulting in millions of horses death is just horrendous. -
Also, I don't like using whips/country crops. I think it's cruel as well. If you were a good rider, you wouldn't have to use those things. How would YOU like it if you were continuously whipped or even smacked? I love horses MORE than I love riding.
Although it's an expensive sport, my parents don't support me riding because they think it's dangerous. Yup, sure is but so is every other sport. Horse riding takes a lot of time and money...especially money! Saddles, reins, stirrups, saddle pads and competitive clothing and boots are EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE! Although, any horse lover would know that at the end, all that money and time is worth it. -
I think it's unquestionably a sport. Yes, the horses are doing a ton of work... but If you are doing it right... the athletics involved is undeniable. Sometimes after riding I could barely stand afterwords! I've done showjumping, barrel racing, trail riding, reining, and most recently cowing. And when it comes to Rodeo... what kind of Rodeo? Cause I may agree... but I may not. And whips and country crops are acceptable if used right. I agree with you to an extent on that. I use whips only if a horse won't get in a trailer. And even then it will only ever come into contact with the horse in a gentle tap. And a crop is necessary with some horses for reminders. I would never go and beat a horse with it, but a tap wouldn't bother them nearly enough to be harmful. Trust me, my horses are SPOILED!!! But they could still kill me unintentionally, I just need to keep up a level of respect with them.
As for the dangerous bit... driving in a car is far more dangerous than riding on a horse. Of course being on a horse has it's risks, but not nearly as much as some of our daily activities. And no kidding it's expensive! That is soo the hardest part of having a horse. And I totally agree. It is entirely worth it. :) -
Here are some videos of a rodeo, which, I am in fact AGAINST:

If you want, type in YouTube Cheyenne Rodeo for more. Using these poor horses for entertainment is just as horrendous and cruel and it needs to stop. This isn't even for competition, but for pure entertainment. -
I just love it.

No I totally agree with that. Those rodeos are entirely cruel.
