Lawrence shook his head, shaking. ‘N-No, no, I do deserve it,’ he whimpered, curling closer to him.
-
“Why do you think that, love??” Briar asked, rubbing Lawrence’s back as he held him close.
(imma head, am getting eepy lol) -
Lawrence took a shaky breath. He held himself close to Briar, closing his eyes, savouring what could be the last time the prince held him. ‘I… I killed your mother,’ he whispered.
(Alr, gn!) -
Briar paused, reeling for a moment. “Wait, wh- what??” He asked, pulling back a little to look Lawrence in the face. “How- I mean, how would you have- have killed her? She- she died from sickness, not- not murder,” he spoke, his voice beginning to shake again. His hands trembled, moving on their own as he cupped Lawrence’s cheeks. “What do you mean, you killed my mother??”
-
Lawrence’s. Bottom lip trembled. He rested his hand on the back of one of Jayden’s hands and kissed his palm. ‘I-I didn’t realise I killed her. I thought it was just a stray bullet that got her in the side, but she died because of me:’
-
“She- She what?” Briar asked shakily, fear in his voice. He pulled his hand back from Lawrence’s, shaking anxiously. “You- you shot my mother?! You- You must be joking, right?” He slowly stood to his feet, laughing anxiously. “This- this is some sick- sick joke, right??”
-
Lawrence groaned in pain when he pulled away, and adjusted to his new position on the floor. ‘Briar, please, it was an accident! I-I was aiming for someone else, I was a terrible shot when I was 18!’
-
Briar stared at Lawrence, a swirl of emotions running through him. “But I- I thought she- And Father said-“ He let out a choked sob, crumpling to the floor as he covered his face with his hands. “I- I can’t believe it…”
-
Lawrence hated that look of Briar’s face. He forced himself into a sitting position and crawled towards him. ‘Babe? I-I’m so sorry,’ he said, voice breaking as he tried to grab the prince’s hand.
-
Briar pulled away from Lawrence, fear and anger in his eyes. “Don’t- don’t touch me,” he muttered, exhaling shakily. “I- I cannot believe y-you never told me! Like, I- I trusted you! And you kept this- this ginormous secret from me, and- And you didn’t think to let me know before I confessed my feelings?!”
-
Lawrence’s eyes welled with tears when Briar pulled away again. He knew he shouldn’t be the one crying, but he couldn’t keep it in. ‘I didn’t know before you told me she died! I thought i-it could have been from something e-else that you said, b-but then you mentioned the time frame and I-I knew-‘ He buried his face in his hands. ‘Briar, it was an accident!’
-
Briar let out a shaky sob, rubbing away his tears. “I- I don’t know what to believe, Lawrence,” he murmured softly, reaching out and grabbing Lawrence’s hands. He pulled them away from his face, watching him. “I- I want to believe you, I really do- I just- My mother, she-“ He fought back another sob, sniffling quietly. “I trusted you, and I- I still want to trust you, but-“
-
‘Please, honey, I didn’t mean to,’ Lawrence said desperately, holding onto Briar’s hands tightly. ‘I-I need you- I die tomorrow, p-please can you just forgive me? You can hate me tomorrow but this could be the last time I see you,’ he whimpered, pressing his forehead against the back of Briar’s hands.
-
“Love, I-“ Briar watched Lawrence with a sad smile, pulling his hands down and resting them against his face. He watched him for a moment, taking a deep breath. “I- I do believe you. I don’t really know why, but- I trust that you didn’t- that you didn’t mean to,” he spoke softly, rubbing his cheek with his thumb. “I forgive you, darling- It’s- it’s what my mother would want me to do.” He pulled his hands back and wrapped his arms around Lawrence, pulling him close. “But I refuse to let you die. I will not let my father kill you-“
-
Lawrence leaned into his touch, then whimpered and settled in his arms. ‘Y-You can’t change it, baby. You’re strong, but your father has the entire army, royal guard and most of the kingdom on his side. I.. I initially felt like I was the villain for fighting him because he-he’s known for being kind.’
