Jayd sighed, then remembered the list of things to ask Maeve about. "Hey Maeve, if you're listening, would you mind telling me about a girl named Beatrice?" It was quite a strange experience talking to nothing.

Maeve appeared again, eyes wide. 'How'd you find out about her? Who told you?' she demanded.

"I read about her!" Jayd said in a rush. "In one of Chester's diary's."

'He'll get very mad if you mention her again!'

"Then I won't ask him!" Jayd promised. "Now can you please tell me about her?"

Maeve looked around. 'What if he finds out?'

"Then it'll be my fault, so he won't get mad at you, he'll get mad at me. But we can talk quieter if it means he might not hear."

Maeve sighed. 'Fine. What do you want to know?'

"Anything. Chester's annoyingly vague in his diary."

'Well, she had brown curly hair, there's an old painting of her in the attic, and... her favourite animal was penguins?'

Jayd looked at Maeve with one eyebrow raised. "While that's very interesting, it's not exactly what I was thinking. What happened between her and Chester? And why would he get so mad if he heard us talking about her?" Jayden knew plenty about not wanting to hear the name of a past lover, but Maeve seemed stranger about it than most people when they talked about their brothers exes.

'They were lovers, didn't you know that? I find it weird you didn't know that. Long story short, she broke Chester's heart and now he hates her.'

"That's it?" Jayd checked. "Nothing else too important? Nothing about her being a crime lord?" He remembered Chester writing about Maeve being suspicious of that exact thing.

Maeve eyes widened. 'Let's not get into the details.

"That's code for: 'Yes Jayden you handsome devil, she was a crime lord of sorts, and also only in it for the power, money and fame. duh.' I can read between the lines."
