Nova sighed as he paced around the ornate box that contained the treasure he was meant to be guarding. Apparently his ancesters could sit meditating for hours and could fast for days in order to focus on this task. Well, he could not.
The building he stood in was a crumbling temple, barely any roof left and cracked stone floors. The roof offered little when it rained, but this was what he called home. Nova hardly traveled farther than a few miles from this place for his entire life. He itched to open the box, but it was ancient and locked 3 times over. The key was long gone. Besides, opening the box was against the rules of his family. Then again, he was the only one left so he supposed he could change the rules...
No, better to stick to tradition. Nova boredly did some backbends to pass the time. -
"A thick, heavy fog covered everything for miles. In some parts it was so thick you couldn't see your hand if it was on your face" The captain told his tale, entrapping his crew with his words "The moon was never seen again, and the sun was just about ready to burst. When the cosmos broke, madness ensued."
It had been ages since the land fell ill. Only Jack knew the day, as he had OCD really bad. Useful though, as he could give us the precise date and time. Some of us even joked around, calling him 'Father Time'.
"Jack" the captain ordered "Time?"
"1:36, capn"
Gazing upwards, the crew saw a sky full of stars. Since light pollution was almost non-existent, the night sky revealed a lot more than a few thousand stars. Holding his finger up, and checking a compass, the captain calculated a heading while the crew watched the stars.
Suddenly, Cherry appeared behind him. Looking over his shoulder, she whispered "How about that place?" He simply nodded, sighing. -
"How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?" Nova said to no one but himself. His voice used to echo when the temple wasn't quite as crumbly, but now it just carried through the wind normally. Nova couldn't talk out loud and listen to his own voice echo back to him, so he was resigned to look like an absolutely insane person by talking to himself and getting zero response.
Nova sometimes passed the time by drawing or reading, but there came a point when everything that he could read had been read 3 times over and everything he could draw was drawn from every possible angle. Nova side-eyed the box on the pedestal. He supposed he could sleep... but keeping eyes off the box was taboo. They used to take turns and shifts watching the box, but now that it was just him he couldn't help but steal a few hours for himself so that he could rest. He felt guilty every time he did, so he had developed bad sleeping habits and eyebags.
Nova stood up and began pacing. -
"Is it that time already Cherry?" The captain mumbled begrudgingly.
"Why yes capn, if I recall you said in two months time.. two months ago" The redhead beamed, grinning from ear to ear "You did promise, capn"
"I know, I know" The captain grumbled again "If we leave now, We can make it by nightfall tomorrow."
Although she was right hand to the captain, Cherry could act independent of the captain and not get in trouble. Although people suspected devious relations, they were bonded like father and daughter. She would cook for the crew most days, and on others their blade expert would cook. The crew looked out for each other, and only had one loss.
"I miss Lawrence." Jack strained "If we hadn't-"
"Shut it, Jack " A deep voice articulated "Nobody cares about your f---in time thing"
As they began to bicker, the captain stood up. He announced that everyone had 5 minutes to pack up, and that they had a new heading. -
Nova sat down, but then stood up again and stretched. He was feeling more hyperactive than normal today. The lack of interaction for the last few years could do that to a person.
"1... 2... 3..." Nova looked up and began counting the stars. He did this in his past time, as he did many other hobbies. He had gotten quite good with his axe, though he wished he could have a person to spar with. As his eyes scoured the starlight, he took in the beauty that he was named after. The farthest he'd gotten with his counting was somewhere in the thousands, and that barely scratched the surface of how many were up there. -
