C1 is fascinated by death, and they constantly think of ways they might die. But each time, something good, no matter how small, stops them.
C2 lives for the future, counting the days until graduation, when they can escape their Indiana town and their aching grief in the wake of their sister's recent death.
When C1 and C2 meet on the ledge of the bell tower at school, it's unclear who saves whom. And when they pair up on a project to discover the natural wonders of their state, both C1 and C2 make more important discoveries: It's only with C2 that C1 can be themself--a weird, funny, live-out-loud person who's not such a freak after all. And it's only with C1 that C2 can forget to count away the days and start living them. But as C2's world grows, C1's begins to shrink.
