"Like I've said many a time, there's strange creatures in the woods. Besides, we don't even know where your brother is. And he doesn't know we're looking for him so he doesn't know to stay out."

"That bad, huh?"

"Very," Jasper said. "Do you know what general direction he went in?"

“I think he was in the center of the forest? I'm positive he would’ve gone to find me a few minutes after I wandered off, so maybe he went West." Winter said.

"Then let's head that way," he said, changing their course.

Winter nodded.
A while later, they were at the place Winter's brother was last seen.
“He should be here somewhere..” Winter mumbled, taking in the forest area. -
Jasper tapped her shoulder. When she was looking at him, he pointed to the shallow footprints on the ground.

Winter 'oohed' and bent down to examine the footprints. They were her brothers footprints, that was certain. But something seemed a bit off about the footprints. There were specks of red in the snow that followed the footprints.

"It doesn't seem like a deep cut," Jasper muttered. He began speed-walking down the path that Winter's brother had made.

Winter followed after him. Her face was twisted in worry and fear for her brother.
The footsteps and blood trail led to a tree stump. The forest went eerily silent the second Jasper and Crystal stumbled upon the tree’s remains.
On the stump was a note.
Picking it up, Crystal read it out loud.
"By now, you've realized that someone very close to you is gone. The blood was no mistake, nor were the footprints. We aren't sure if you've heard about us, but we're the royal family of Yaardsvark. If you have, then you know about our deadly power of darkness. You may be wondering why we stole your brother, Princess Winter. It’s because you have something WE want. If the gem isn't returned to us by next Saturday at sunset, have fun planning a funeral. -
Jasper looked at her. "You didn't mention a gem," he sad.

Crystal looked at the ground sheepishly and kicked at a rock.
"You didn't ask about a gem." She muttered. -
"I asked you what happened, though, I think the gem would be included in that," Jasper said. He let out a sigh. "Do you have it?"

Winter bit her lip and slowly reached into her cloak’s hood. Resting in her palm was a shiny, sparkling crystal gem.

"Ok, we'll take the gem to them and get your brother back," Jasper said, seeing no problem in his plan.
