Option 1: C1's family life was always terrible. They hate their family, and they feel like everyone would be the same way as them. So they never let themselves get too close to anyone, no matter who they are. They don't have any friends, lovers, family, anything. But then C2 comes along and is insistent on finding a way to tear down C1's walls and be their new family.
Option 2: C1's love was always terrible. All of their past lovers were abusive and/or manipulative, and they feel like everyone would be the same way as them. So they never let themselves get too close to anyone, no matter who they are. But then C2 comes along and is insistent on finding a way to tear down C1's walls because they have fallen in love with C1.
